About The Position

Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences is seeking two full-time Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) for the Nursing Relief Pool. As an RPN, you will provide assessment and therapeutic interventions in a recovery-focused model of care, delivering mental health and general nursing care to patients with severe and persistent mental illness. You will organize and collaborate in the planning and implementation of nursing best practices with Registered Nurses and an interprofessional team. The Nursing Relief Pool provides just-in-time staffing for inpatient units when regular staff is unavailable. Orientation and training will be provided. The successful incumbent must be adaptable to frequent changes in their working environment and collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team. RPNs in this pool must be able to work in any area of the hospital as patient needs dictate.

Requirements

  • Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing
  • RPN diploma
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required
  • Current CPR – Health Care Providers (HCP) certification
  • Demonstrated knowledge of College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Standards of Practice and commitment to maintaining reflective practice standards as described by the CNO
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian Standards for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, as well as relevant policies and legislation, such as the Mental Health Act and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated competence within the full scope of practice of a Registered Practical Nurse in the provision of assessment, care, medications, interventions and documentation of care needs
  • Proven excellent interpersonal skills and effective oral/written communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational, problem-solving, decision-making, conflict resolution and critical thinking abilities
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position
  • Proven good attendance record with the capability of maintaining this same standard
  • Must be available to work all shifts

Nice To Haves

  • Recent psychiatric nursing experience in a mental health facility, long term care facility or service
  • Recent experience working with patients with mental illnesses
  • The ability to work with clients of diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds
  • Proficiency in a second language
  • Research experience

Responsibilities
