About The Position

The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) provides nursing care for clients to promote health and assess need for provision of care and treatment of health conditions by supportive preventive therapeutic palliative and rehabilitation means in order to attain or maintain optimal function. The RPN role models professional values beliefs and attributes and practices in accordance with the SJHH mission and values policies and procedures and College of Nurses Standards and Guidelines. A high level of collaboration between RPN and RN is required to ensure safe and effective care. The RPN provides care for less complex clients whose outcomes are more predictable and risk for negative outcomes is low. The RPN is accountable to recognize changes in acuity and/or complexity in client needs and consulting with a Registered Nurse (RN) in determining next steps in provision of care.

Requirements

  • Current registration with the College of Nurse of Ontario required.
  • Practical Nursing Diploma from an accredited college program with evidence of IV medication administration as part of the basic educational curriculum OR Practical Nursing Diploma from an accredited college program and IV medication administration certificate from an accredited college program if this content was not included in the basic diploma educational curriculum OR Practical Nursing Certificate from an accredited college program a medication administration certificate and an IV medication administration certificate from an accredited college program.
  • Applicants must hold current registration in the Province of Ontario including Asepsis Techniques and Medication Administration Certification.
  • Recent clinical experience (within the last 2 years) in Maternal-Newborn nursing.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Provider certification or commitment to successfully complete within 3 months of employment.
  • General Nursing experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and tactfully maintain good interpersonal relationships and set own workload priorities.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and organization skills and the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and learning related to the nursing care of childbearing women newborns children and their families.
  • Good work performance and demonstrated good attendance record are essential.
  • A resume regarding further education special courses and experience should accompany the application.

Nice To Haves

  • Perinatal Nursing Certificate from a recognized College or C.N.A. certification
  • Breastfeeding Certificate from a recognized College program
  • International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) designation
  • Recent maternal-newborn experience and Perinatal & Breastfeeding courses
