Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program
  • Licensure and registration in Nova Scotia as a Pharmacy Technician (NSPR) required
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, inventory control and record keeping
  • Demonstrated good decision making and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medications
  • Knowledge of the law and regulations pertaining to the receipt, storage and distribution of prescription and narcotic drugs
  • Basic typing skills or computer/keyboard experience; skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, etc.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills

  • If there are no candidates who meet the above qualification, candidates actively pursuing Pharmacy Technician licensure within the Province of Nova scotia will be considered
  • If there are no candidates who meet the above qualification, Pharmacy Practice Assistants may be considered
  • Drug administration by injection technical permit (Pharmacy Technician) an asset
  • Experience as a pharmacy technician/pharmacy practice assistant, preferably in a hospital, an asset
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and special precautions used with chemotherapy are an asset
  • Experience in unit dose drug distribution systems, automation technology, decentralized medication dispensing cabinets, an asset
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Responsibilities

  • Obtaining a best possible medication history (BPMH) for patients being admitted from emergency department to an inpatient hospital unit or non-admitted patients; for patients seen in Surgery Preassessment clinic and for inpatient units.
  • Conducting patient medication history interviews with patient and family, collecting patient information from the Drug Information System (or alternate source if not available), documenting BPMH in patient chart to be used to create admission medication orders.
  • Reconciling medication orders completed by another health care provider.
  • Communicating to staff and physicians regarding medication reconciliation.
  • Problem solving with the patient care team and pharmacy staff.
  • Medication reconciliation at all transitions of care.
  • Acting as a resource to staff and physicians.
  • Directing team members to ask for BPMH completion.
  • Confirming accuracy of patient medication information with community care providers or patient’s medical record.
