About The Position

This is a part-time wage position at Red Onion State Prison, limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30. Wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This position offers no state benefits. The role involves providing nursing care within adult institutions by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per the standards of practice. This includes 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care. The nurse will document all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality and interfacing with other departments as needed. Registered Nurses are expected to delegate tasks/workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned, and be capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs. The role also focuses on providing evidence-based nursing care and promoting continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.

Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia RN license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not yet licensed, NCLEX-RN Exam must be scheduled at time of application).
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire.
