About The Position

The primary responsibility of the Registered Nurse (RN) is to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility during their tour of duty, ensuring the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. This role involves administrative, committee, personnel, nursing care, staff development, safety and sanitation, equipment and supply, care plan and assessment, and budget and planning functions, all under the direction of the Director of Nursing Services and/or Assistant Director of Nursing.

Requirements

  • Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
  • 2 years or more experience, preferably in a long-term care facility.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to read technical procedures.
  • Ability to read and comprehend policy and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
  • Ability to solve practical problems.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
  • Leadership and supervisory ability.
  • Willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.

  • Current CPR certification.
  • Must maintain all required continuing education/licensing.
  • Must remain in good standing with the State Board of Nursing at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility.
  • Ensure quality care is maintained in accordance with federal, state, and local standards.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing nursing activities.
  • Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating policies and procedures.
  • Ensure reference materials and the Nursing Service Procedures Manual are current.
  • Ensure nursing service personnel comply with policies and procedures.
  • Make reports and recommendations to the Director of Nursing.
  • Review department policies, procedure manuals, and job descriptions.
  • Coordinate nursing services with other resident services.
  • Ensure personnel comply with job descriptions.
  • Participate in the facility’s quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
  • Participate in facility surveys and inspections.
  • Review and update resident discharge plans.
  • Assist in planning the nursing services portion of the resident’s discharge plan.
  • Meet with nursing staff and support personnel.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents.
  • Complete accident/incident reports.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms and charting.
  • Maintain confidentiality of user ID, password, and resident health information.
  • Attend various committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment).
  • Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
  • Participate in developing the agenda for Care Plan Committee meetings.
  • Review and implement recommendations from committees.
  • Ensure sufficient licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants are available.
  • Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses.
  • Ensure nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from an approved training program.
  • Supervise nurse aide trainees.
  • Conduct daily rounds to ensure work assignments are performed correctly.
  • Monitor absenteeism and report problem areas.
  • Ensure established policies and procedures, including dress codes, are followed.
  • Review and report complaints and grievances from department personnel.
  • Foster a good working relationship with inter-department personnel.
  • Create and maintain a positive and calm environment.
  • Hold regular meetings with shift staff to identify and correct problems.
  • Review and evaluate department workforce and make recommendations.
  • Participate in employee performance evaluations and staffing recommendations.
  • Ensure fair disciplinary action is administered.
  • Report occupational exposures and suspected fraud.
  • Ensure computer workstations are logged off or password protected.
  • Inform nursing staff of new admissions.
  • Ensure rooms are ready for new admissions.
  • Greet and escort new admissions.
  • Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
  • Encourage timely recording and signing of physician notes and orders.
  • Inform the Director of delayed physician visits.
  • Consult with residents, families, and physicians on care plans.
  • Notify physicians and next-of-kin of changes in resident condition.
  • Visit residents daily to assess physical and emotional status.
  • Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
  • Review nurses’ notes for accuracy and completeness.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Start IVs and obtain specimens.
  • Take vital signs and blood pressures.
  • Report problem areas and assist in corrective action.
  • Keep the Director informed of resident status.
  • Monitor seriously ill residents.
  • Authorize the use of restraints when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with medication and supply administration, storage, and control procedures.
  • Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules.
  • Review medication cards for accuracy.
  • Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety.
  • Ensure residents unable to call for help are checked frequently.
  • Meet with residents and/or family members as necessary.
  • Arrange transportation for discharged residents.
  • Inform families of resident deaths.
  • Call funeral homes as requested.
  • Participate in developing and conducting in-service training classes.
  • Assist in developing annual facility in-service training programs.
  • Assist in planning clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
  • Attend continuing education programs.
  • Assist in developing safety standards for the nursing service department.
  • Identify, evaluate, and classify tasks with potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Ensure personnel participate in training for tasks involving potential exposure.
  • Ensure availability and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Monitor personnel adherence to safety regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with established safety and sanitation policies.
  • Maintain clean and sanitary nursing service work areas.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and sanitary resident care rooms and treatment areas.
  • Ensure adherence to handwashing and hand hygiene procedures.
  • Participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
  • Participate in the infection control program.
  • Ensure adherence to infection control procedures for isolation precautions.
  • Participate in developing procedures for reporting hazardous conditions.
  • Ensure use of safety equipment when lifting or moving residents.
  • Report missing/illegible labels and MSDSs.
  • Recommend equipment and supply needs to the Director.
  • Ensure adequate stock levels of medications, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist in developing a preventive maintenance program for equipment.
  • Participate in developing procedures for safe operation of nursing service equipment.
  • Ensure only trained personnel operate equipment.
  • Ensure equipment is operated safely.
  • Monitor nursing procedures to prevent waste of supplies.
  • Ensure MSDSs are on file for hazardous chemicals.
  • Participate in developing resident assessments.
  • Participate in developing resident care plans.
  • Encourage resident participation in care plan development and review.
  • Review resident care plans for appropriate goals, problems, and revisions.
  • Ensure personnel are aware of and refer to resident care plans.
  • Review nurses’ notes to ensure care plans are followed.
  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and revising MDS, RAPs, and Triggers.
  • Review resident treatments to ensure they align with care plans.
  • Keep abreast of economic conditions and recommend adjustments.
  • Report suspected fraud related to billings, cost reports, etc.
  • Assist with the overall supervision and management of the nursing staff.
