About The Position

The OR Registered Nurse delivers quality patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation; and effectively interacts with patients, family, and other health team members while maintaining standards of professional nursing. This role involves preparing and organizing supplies for operative procedures, identifying and meeting the needs of patients undergoing surgical or laser procedures, and contributing to individualized plans of care. The nurse will also assist with anesthetic interventions, act as a liaison between patients/families and clinical staff, and document required information accurately. Additionally, the role requires safe mixing of medications, adherence to Universal Precautions, effective communication, and participation in quality improvement activities.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Current Virginia RN license
  • Exhibits ability to learn and apply new skills
  • Must be knowledgeable in interpreting diagnostic test results and initiates appropriate measures as indicated
  • BLS and the employee has six months from there hire date to acquire ACLS

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
  • 3 years of operating room experience preferred
  • Ambulatory surgery experience preferred
  • Membership in related professional organization is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Protects and maintains confidentiality of information while adhering to all HIPPA compliance practices.
  • Selects, prepares, and organizes supplies for the operative procedure.
  • Identifies and meets needs of patients preparing and undergoing surgical intervention or laser procedures in the operating room, under various levels of anesthesia.
  • Contributes and follows individualized plan of care based on the nursing diagnosis, standards of care and patient outcome. Involves patient and family in care decisions.
  • Assists with the administration of anesthetic intervention.
  • Is cross-trained to function in more than one area within the facility as needed and shares responsibility for covering late cases.
  • Acts as liaison between patient/family and other clinical staff.
  • Documents required information using correct terminology and conforming to required style.
  • Mixes medications safely and accurately.
  • Practices principals and techniques of Universal Precautions while utilizing available PPE.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills by conveying necessary information accurately, listening effectively and asking questions when clarification is needed.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities and seeks ways to improve systems and services.
