About The Position

Akicita Federal is hiring Registered Nurses to deliver direct, high-acuity primary and specialty care to veterans served by the Dayton VA Medical Center in Dayton, OH. In this role, you will spend the vast majority of your time at the bedside — assessing patients, driving care plans, and making real-time clinical decisions that directly improve veteran health outcomes. If you thrive in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment where your independent judgment and technical skills matter every day, this is your opportunity.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year of direct patient care experience within the last 3 years.
  • Graduation from a professional nursing program accredited by ACEN or CCNE.
  • Current, active Registered Nurse license issued by the Ohio Board of Nursing.
  • Current CPR certification from an American Heart Association-approved vendor and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required if assigned to a specialty clinic environment.
  • Professional proficiency in English — speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a VA or other federal healthcare setting, with familiarity with Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) or similar VA electronic health record platforms.
  • Background spanning multiple care environments — ICU, Emergency Department, and/or Operating Room — demonstrating versatility across high-acuity settings.
  • Experience with ventilator management and central line care in compliance with evidence-based hospital protocols.
  • Demonstrated comfort leading or contributing to interdisciplinary care conferences and patient discharge planning teams.
  • History of serving veteran or military-affiliated patient populations and an understanding of the unique health needs of this community.

Responsibilities

  • Perform critical care nursing for ICU patients and fulfill scrub and circulating duties in the Emergency Department and Operating Room as assigned.
  • Conduct thorough patient assessments, formulate individualized nursing care plans, and document all clinical interventions directly into the electronic medical record.
  • Administer prescribed medications and IV therapies, monitor patient responses, and maintain comprehensive knowledge of emergency medications stored on the crash cart.
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms, recognize clinical implications, and initiate appropriate life-saving measures — including in the absence of an on-site physician.
  • Operate complex technical equipment including defibrillators, EKG machines, and cardiac monitors; perform central line and ventilator care in compliance with facility policies.
  • Conduct skin assessments and implement nursing interventions to prevent hospital-acquired pressure ulcers; accurately record patient intake and output each shift.
  • Educate patients and families on medications, therapies, and procedures; actively participate in interdisciplinary discharge planning and log any patient safety incidents within required timeframes.
