About The Position
The Definitive Observation Unit Registered Nurse (DOU RN), also referred to as an Observation Unit Nurse or Acute Observation Registered Nurse, provides specialized nursing care to patients requiring short-term observation, typically from several hours up to 24–48 hours. The role focuses on closely monitoring patients with acute but stable conditions to determine whether they need full hospital admission or can be safely discharged. The position is part-time on day shifts, with 12-hour shifts, at Mission Regional Medical Center in Mission, Texas. Mission Regional Medical Center is a 297-bed, non-profit hospital providing inpatient and outpatient services to the Rio Grande Valley.
Requirements
- Current and valid state RN license.
- Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintained thereafter.
Nice To Haves
- Current ACLS certificate within 30 days of hire and maintained thereafter.
- Previous acute care hospital experience.
- Ventilator management experience.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Responsibilities
- Conduct frequent assessments of patients’ vital signs, symptoms, and overall condition to detect changes or complications.
- Administer medications and treatments as ordered, ensuring timely and accurate delivery.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare team members to implement and update individualized care plans.
- Educate patients and families about conditions, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
- Accurately document patient care, clinical observations, and communication in the medical record.
- Coordinate diagnostic tests and procedures and monitor results to support clinical decision-making.
- Ensure a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for patients during their observation stay.
- Facilitate timely transitions of care, whether discharge or admission to an inpatient unit.
