The Registered Nurse in the Operating Room collaborates with physicians to develop and implement a plan of care aimed at returning the patient to optimal health. This role involves providing direct bedside nursing care, executing medical orders, and overseeing the functions of various support staff including Nurse Assistants, Patient Care Associates, OB Care Associates, Surgical Service Assistants, Nursing Clerks, and Psychiatric Technicians. The nurse is responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of the care plan and assumes a leadership role in integrating evidence-based practice, delegating and coordinating nursing care tasks, and facilitating patient conferences. Additionally, the role involves identifying and addressing patient teaching needs for ongoing care and discharge/transfer, and promoting professional growth through educational opportunities. The nurse also teaches and guides professional and ancillary personnel, precepts new employees and students, and functions as a team leader to ensure appropriate patient placement and assignment delegation. Specific to the Operating Room, the RN circulates surgical care teams across various specialty service lines, assesses and monitors patients receiving moderate sedation, interprets cardiac rhythm strips, maintains aseptic technique, and ensures safe surgical preparation and patient positioning.
