About The Position

This position is for a Registered Nurse (RN) at the Dayton VA Medical Center in Dayton, OH. The role involves providing both direct and indirect nursing care across various specialties including Intensive Care, Medical-Surgical, Telemetry/Cardiac Monitoring, and the Emergency Room. The facility operates 24/7/365, and this is a 1-year contract position with a 6-8 week credentialing/onboarding period. The nurse will be responsible for patient assessment, planning and implementing nursing care, documenting care provided, administering medications, and participating in discharge planning. The role also requires knowledge of emergency procedures, central line/ventilator care, and EMR documentation.

Requirements

  • Current license from the Ohio Board of Nursing
  • BLS (American Heart Association)
  • ACLS (American Heart Association)
  • Graduate of a professional nursing program accredited by ACEN or CCNE, approved by the state-accrediting agency at time of completion
  • Minimum 1 year direct patient care experience within the last 3 years
  • Fluent English (speak/read/write)
  • Independent clinical judgment, interdisciplinary care approach
  • EHR/CPRS documentation, E&M/procedure coding
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms and operate defibrillator, EKG, cardiac monitor
  • Central line/ventilator care

Responsibilities

  • Provides indirect nursing care: patient assessment, priority-setting, nursing measures, outcome evaluation
  • Obtains patient/family history and assesses patient and plans nursing care
  • Documents plan of care/care given in medical record; verifies transcription of physician orders (no verbal orders except per facility policy)
  • Reassesses condition, revises care plans and administers medications/IV therapy
  • Knowledge of emergency drug dosages/crash cart locations
  • Assesses/documents patient response to medications
  • Initiates emergency measures in absence of physician and assists surgical/diagnostic procedures
  • Discharge planning participation
  • Skin assessment/HAPU prevention and catheter/prosthesis care
  • Intake/output assessment every shift
  • Reviews lab data and EMR
  • Attends weekly Nurse Call (1 hr), Provider All Call (.5 hr), weekly All Call (.5 hr), monthly Admin Meeting (.5 hr)
  • QA/QI documentation (FPPE/OPPE); patient safety incident reporting within 24 hrs
