About The Position

The Texas Behavioral Health Center is a newly completed state-funded psychiatric hospital opening in Dallas’ Southwestern Medical District, owned by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and operated by UT Southwestern Medical Center. This facility is designed to deliver state-of-the-art, patient-centered care in a modern and healing environment, featuring 292 beds for adult, children, and adolescent patients. The center provides comprehensive behavioral health treatment with private patient rooms, abundant natural light, and spaces that promote recovery. This position works under the general supervision of a physician, advanced practice provider, and/or nursing leadership to provide nursing services in the care and treatment of patients.

Requirements

• Graduate of an approved/accredited nursing program either by a governmental authority, nursing board, or by a licensing authority that has jurisdiction over approval/accreditation of nursing programs (Texas BON 217.1).
• Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
• 1 year of RN experience.
• Specialty areas may have increased experience requirements as dictated by unit or standard of care.
• NURSING LICENSURE COMPACT-BNE current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license.
• BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
• Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Applied Physical Skills within four weeks of start date.

Nice To Haves

• 1 year of Mental Health Psychiatric RN experience.
• Bachelor's Degree BSN.
• NURSING LICENSURE COMPACT-BNE current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license.
• BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).

Responsibilities

• Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments, considering age-specific criteria for children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.
• Anticipates patients' and/or patients' family needs and expectations to develop an appropriate plan of care.
• Utilizes critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing nursing care.
• Maintains and utilizes competencies per unit expectation.
• Identifies and implements appropriate nursing interventions based on assessment and completes accurate and timely documentation.
• Acts as a coordinator of the interdisciplinary plan of care, conferring collaboratively with healthcare team members.
• Shares information and observations to advocate for optimal patient care.
• Prioritizes nursing interventions based on assessment and promptly identifies changes in condition, reporting and taking follow-up action as appropriate.
• Involves patients in their plan of care and keeps patients, families, and/or caregivers informed.
• Evaluates implemented interventions and modifies care accordingly, documenting interventions and modifications accurately and timely.
• Adheres to hospital and/or Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways, and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice.
• Incorporates ANA standards, professional practice model (Shared governance), and care delivery model (Relationship Based Care) into patient care.
• Provides appropriate and timely answers and/or education to patients, families, significant others, and/or caregivers, documenting all education provided.
• Assesses competence and obtains feedback/evaluation of understanding from patient, family, significant others, and/or caregivers.
• Demonstrates effective communication based on individual patient needs and learning preferences.
• Welcomes and orients patients, families, significant others, and/or caregivers to the unit, encouraging participation in care.
• Reviews personalized patient plan of care with patient/family every shift, updating white boards and setting daily goals with patient input.
• Explains special diets, tests, procedures, and medications in easily understood language.
• Makes hourly rounds on patients and communicates return times.
• Advocates for resources and support that enhance patient safety and unit/hospital-based initiatives.
• Participates in evaluating data to guide decisions regarding unit/department budget formulation and implementation.
• Performs Peer Evaluation to provide constructive feedback to peers.
• Holds co-workers accountable for their behavior and compliance with policies and standards.
• Actively intervenes when patient safety is at risk.
• Is accountable for patient care and quality/safety initiatives (e.g., patient safety, patient satisfaction, core measures, infection control).
• Shares professional and technical information with colleagues and students.
• Offers self as a resource to others (e.g., preceptor, charge, mentor, unit expert, lends a hand when needed).
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Ability to perform all CPI APS physical holds.
• Ability to care for Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse age-specific patients within the facility.
