The Registered Nurse will work in an adult-to-geriatric intensive care unit. The unit has 24 rooms and an average daily census of 19, with a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2–3; nurses should be prepared to take a third patient. The role involves caring for patients with diagnoses and conditions including ARDS, sepsis, stroke, STEMI, DKA, postoperative complications, cardiogenic shock, gastrointestinal bleeding, COPD exacerbation, encephalopathy, liver failure, drug overdose, and ESRD on CRRT. The position requires floating within the facility and the nurse’s scope of practice as needed. Block scheduling is not guaranteed, and travel pairs are not accepted, including when one traveler is assigned to another unit. Nurses work every other weekend unless otherwise specified. Holiday expectations depend on how many major holidays fall within the assignment: work one if one falls during the assignment; both if two fall during it; or two if three fall during it. Full compliance is required to start on time; otherwise, the start may be pushed back two weeks because orientation is biweekly. Candidates undergo a clinical review to assess fit and, if they pass and meet Piedmont guidelines, are sent to the manager for a final decision. Clinical screens are sent case by case. Local candidates are accepted at the same rate. Non-billable orientation hours depend on contract length, such as 8 hours for an 8-week assignment or 19 hours for a 19-week assignment.
