The Registered Nurse (RN) coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across settings and throughout the continuum of care, following the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model and the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. Responsibilities include planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of care for assigned patients. The RN provides leadership through precepting, formal and informal leadership, and quality improvement efforts; delegates care based on staff skill, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability; and may participate in committees or projects. Strong communication, mentoring, and teaching skills are important. Some employees may be required to drive a personal vehicle as part of the role. The position is in an 18-bed thoracic/vascular intensive care unit serving a diverse patient population, including thoracic, vascular, orthopedic, plastics, urology, ENT, oral/facial, interventional radiology-lytic procedure, status 1A heart, and obstetric patients, with occasional cardiovascular surgery and medical patients. Care commonly involves short-term postoperative stays averaging two to three days, and occasionally longer-term care for complex multisystem failure. Nurses collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to monitor respiratory and hemodynamic status, prevent skin breakdown and infection, manage acute and chronic pain, educate patients, and plan discharges. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship requires state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification. New graduate nurses are directed to apply through Mayo Clinic’s Nurse Residency Program.
