Registered Nurse (PRN): Buckingham Correctional Center
About The Position
This is a PRN (as needed) Registered Nurse position within adult correctional institutions. The role involves utilizing the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating) to provide patient care according to established standards of practice. Services include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life support/emergency care. The nurse will document all pertinent information in health records, maintain confidentiality, and interface with other departments as needed. This position requires the ability to delegate tasks and work hours, days, and locations as assigned, and to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional demands. The role also emphasizes providing evidence-based nursing care and promoting continued competence through education and certification, with a focus on correctional nursing. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet clinical and administrative needs. This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.
Requirements
- Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia RN license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not yet licensed, NCLEX-RN Exam must be scheduled at time of application).
- Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American. Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire.

Responsibilities

- Accept assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
