About The Position

Duke Raleigh Hospital, a campus of Duke University Hospital, is seeking a Registered Nurse for its Inpatient Surgical Oncology unit. This 32-bed unit, South Pavilion 4700, primarily admits patients for pre- or post-operative care. The unit serves main surgical populations including head & neck, cardiothoracic, breast, GI, GYN, urology, vascular, and plastics. Nurses on this unit will have opportunities to practice a wide variety of skills such as chest tube and other drain management, tube feedings, trach care, pain management with PCAs/epidurals, and wound care. The unit is part of the Duke Cancer Institute of Wake County, providing comprehensive cancer treatment across inpatient and ambulatory settings. Duke Health is a Magnet organization, and its nurses are recognized as North Carolina's Great 100 Nurses. The system also received the American Board of Nursing Specialties Award for Nursing Certification Advocacy.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program is required.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date.
  • Nurses hired at Duke Health with a valid compact license are required to obtain their North Carolina nursing license within 90 days of their start date.
  • BLS required.
  • Knowledge of scope of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and NCA.
  • Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process.
  • Knowledge of professional theory, practice, and procedure.
  • Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families.
  • Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others.
  • Ability to teach patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care.
  • Ability to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow-up.
  • Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools.
  • Ability to use fine motor skills.
  • Competent in BLS and/or other specialized life support requirements designated by work area or organization.
  • Ability to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status.
  • Ability to use computer and learn new software programs.
  • Ability to navigate the entity to provide clinical care for patients.
  • Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking.
  • Ability to remain focused and organized.
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.
  • Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.
  • Working knowledge and completion of appropriate JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
  • Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing Required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Assist other nursing personnel in the delivery of nursing care and act as team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of general policies and procedures designed to effect efficiency of operations.
  • Provide direction and guidance in the proper use, care and control of material resources; appraise quality and effectiveness of material and equipment and report results to head nurse; maintain standards of cleanliness in assigned areas.
  • Observe activities of nursing staff and make recommendations to nursing management for improvement in the quality and effectiveness of nursing care given.
  • Collect and analyze patient data, develop and implement nursing care plans, establish interpersonal relationships with patients, evaluate nursing care given and communicate to proper personnel relevant facts about patients, action taken and patient status.
