About The Position

The City of Hamilton is seeking a Registered Nurse for Wentworth Lodge. This role involves providing professional nursing care to residents, directing and supervising nursing staff, and managing the unit's activities. The Registered Nurse will collaborate with the Director of Nursing, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality resident care. The position is permanent part-time within the Healthy & Safe Communities Department, which is committed to building a strong and healthy community through excellence, respect, and lifelong learning.

Requirements

  • Must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Demonstrated competency in completing computer documentation is required.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in planning, coordinating, and supervising the work of other nursing personnel.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, decision-making, and assessment skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and co-operatively in a multi-disciplinary situation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations as it relates to the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience in Long Term Care with understanding of the Fixing Long-Term Care Act & Regulations is preferable.
  • Experience in geriatrics, or completion of a course in geriatric nursing is desirable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with RAI – MDS is considered essential.
  • Experience in completing electronic documentation using PointClick Care would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care in accordance with administrative policies, physicians' orders, established standards, and recognized nursing principles.
  • Assess residents' conditions, recognize and interpret symptoms and signs, and institute remedial health measures.
  • Assume responsibility for the nursing care of acutely ill residents and assist physicians in diagnostic and therapeutic measures.
  • Process prescribed medications, check incoming supplies, and manage Emergency Medication Box supplies.
  • Participate in medication administration to residents and supervise medication administration by R.P.N. staff.
  • Manage treatments as prescribed and supervise R.P.N. staff assisting with treatments.
  • Ensure the safekeeping of drug and narcotic keys and perform shift counts in accordance with controlled drug policy.
  • Observe, report, and record symptoms and conditions of residents.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of nursing observations and care.
  • Ensure proper care of equipment used in providing resident care.
  • Develop and maintain up-to-date MDS Assessments, Resident Assessment Protocols (RAPS), and corresponding Resident Care Plans.
  • Ensure that incident/accident reports are completed with appropriate follow-up.
  • Assist in maintaining a physical and psycho-social environment that meets residents' needs.
  • Participate as a clinical preceptor for students.
  • Assist in teaching residents good health habits.
  • Assist in maintaining adequate standards of cleanliness.
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with residents, residents' families, and visitors, identifying and understanding residents' needs.
  • Assist with in-service education of nursing personnel and, where appropriate, assist in nursing research.
  • Direct and supervise Registered Practical Nurses and Personal Support Workers.
  • Prepare the nursing schedule for the unit in conjunction with the Director of Nursing and/or assistant.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with all personnel in the home and external agencies.
  • Ensure employees are provided with and use appropriate equipment, materials, and/or procedures.
  • Ensure all employees perform work in accordance with applicable Health and Safety legislation and City of Hamilton policies and procedures.
  • Recommend appropriate action for employees not in compliance with legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Work in accordance with applicable Health and Safety legislation and City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which are directly related to the responsibilities of the position.
