The Registered Nurse (RN) works primarily in direct patient care and demonstrates competent clinical practice in the Emergency Department. The role triages patients; obtains histories and vital signs; assesses patients; and initiates immediate care independently in life-threatening situations when a physician is absent. The RN cares for acutely ill and non-acute patients, performs procedures using simple and complex nursing skills, and assists physicians with procedures. The role provides physical and psychological comfort to patients, families, and visitors; gives discharge and follow-up instructions; and answers ambulance radios, providing appropriate pre-hospital care orders without assistance. The position involves sophisticated equipment and caring for varied patient populations in a frequently stressful environment. The RN assesses patient needs, provides skilled nursing services under physician-authorized plans of care and accepted nursing standards, processes provider orders, evaluates treatment effectiveness, and collaborates with the care team to update plans. The position also includes patient and family education, documentation, coordination of referrals and care, and maintaining a safe patient environment. Required credentials include an RN license and specified life-support, trauma, emergency nursing, aggression-management, and incident-management certifications, with completion deadlines after hire or transfer. An associate degree in nursing is required; a bachelor’s degree is preferred. The job requires nursing knowledge typically acquired through two years of experience in a medical center or similar setting. Weekend RN positions require at least two years of experience.
