The Registered Nurse provides advanced patient care in a hospital or inpatient setting for patients with serious illnesses or injuries who require timely, complex care to stabilize and support their condition. The role involves complex assessment and therapies, high-intensity interventions, continuous nursing vigilance, and care appropriate to the ages and needs of patients on the assigned unit or department. The nurse assesses patients, develops and revises individualized care plans, evaluates progress, documents care, and coordinates and delegates care to other team members while collaborating with physicians and the interdisciplinary team. Registered Nurses with specialized training may serve as Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Specialists, supporting extracorporeal life support services in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and other hospital settings. Under the direction of unit leadership and medical and perfusion providers, ECMO Specialists operate and monitor ECMO equipment and circuits, administer ordered medications and blood products through the circuit, support transport, and respond to emergencies. They maintain continuous ECLS coverage, attend required quarterly simulations, and provide critical nursing resource support to the CVICU or other areas when not providing ECLS services. The nurse also contributes to staff development, mentoring, quality improvement, professional practice, and organizational outcomes. The role includes maintaining a safe and organized work area, attending in-services and meetings, and assuming other duties as assigned.
