About The Position

The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) provides an inclusive, language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21. Rooted in a bilingual education approach, MSD ensures full access to American Sign Language and English across comprehensive academic, extracurricular, and student life programs. In partnership with families and communities, MSD empowers students to think critically and develop a sense of self and belonging. The MSD nurse is responsible for providing health care for the students and to act as a health care liaison between parents and the school. This is an 11-month, school-year position. Nurses do not work when school is closed during winter break, spring break, and during the summer months. The salary range reflects the 11-month work schedule. This is a 2nd Shift position. The work schedule is Sundays (4:00 PM - 11:00 PM) and Mondays-Thursdays (2:45 PM - 11:00 PM), plus 3 weekends during the school year (one in fall, one in winter, and one in spring).

Requirements

  • Current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing or a current multi-state license in party states that candidates have declared as primary states of residence.
  • Willingness to learn American Sign Language and become conversational within two years.
  • Subject to call-in and must provide the facility with a phone number at which they can be reached.
  • Subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  • New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.
  • Must provide three letters of recommendation.

Nice To Haves

  • Skilled in American Sign Language.
  • Two years experience working with children either in a school or hospital setting.
  • Able to work and make decisions independently.
  • One year of experience in school, critical care, or community nursing.
  • Knowledge or ability to navigate Google Workspace.
  • Experience with PowerSchool or another student information system.
  • Possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland (if assigned duties requiring operation of an automobile).
  • Successfully complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and maintain current certification.

Responsibilities

  • Providing health care for the students.
  • Acting as a health care liaison between parents and the school.
  • Being in regular contact with school staff, dorm staff, teachers, teacher aides, students and parents/guardians, as well as providers, medical facilities and private duty nurses.
  • Administering medications prescribed for medical conditions or injuries.
  • Assessing, evaluating, and monitoring students’ current medical and emotional health status and identifying nursing needs of students.
  • Maintaining accurate and adequate records of nursing care, observations, and treatment according to established procedures.
  • Maintaining the Student Health Center to ensure a safe, operational, and compliant environment for patient care.
  • Providing auxiliary duties as needed.
