The Registered Nurse provides nursing care to patients from infancy through the adult lifespan, using knowledge of age-related growth and development to individualize the nursing process in accordance with nursing philosophy and objectives, standards of care, and standards of practice. The position is based in the Women’s and Children’s Health Unit (WACHU) at Cheshire Medical Center, a community hospital unit caring for labor and delivery, postpartum mothers and babies, and gynecological patients. The unit has four labor rooms, an operating room, separate postpartum facilities, hydrotherapy for labor pain management, a nursery for infant testing or post-resuscitation care, and a negative-pressure room. The role works 12-hour night shifts on a four-week schedule, with every other weekend off. Orientation and training are extensive, typically eight weeks in postpartum and 12 weeks in labor and delivery. Additional certifications are available, including Neonatal Resuscitation Program, STABLE, AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring, and NCC nursing certifications. Professional growth is encouraged through committee and meeting involvement, shared governance, practice improvement projects, and charge nurse training.
