The Registered Nurse (RN) in the SMCF Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) uses the nursing process—assessment, diagnosis, outcomes and planning, implementation, and evaluation—to provide individualized patient care. The role collaborates with interprofessional colleagues, including physicians, to plan, implement, and evaluate care, and practices within the full scope of nursing expertise using age- and population-specific standards for the assigned clinical setting. The RN cares for patients throughout preventive care, health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. Responsibilities include planning and coordinating care, assessing and educating patients, triage, and other nursing interventions. The nurse works in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act and applicable administrative rules, as well as Sanford’s professional nursing practice standards. The SMCF PACU provides close observation and monitoring for patients recovering from procedures involving anesthesia or sedation. Patients range from infants to geriatric adults. The department includes an 18-bay PACU open 24/7 and an 8-bay second-floor PACU currently serving pediatric patients Monday through Friday during the day, with future capacity planned for 27 bays. Specialty areas include cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, trauma, ENT, general, orthopedic, plastics, peripheral vascular, urology, interventional radiology and cardiology, endoscopy, and procedural testing such as MRI with anesthesia.
