The Registered Nurse - OR is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the framework of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis and patient outcome) in the preoperative, interoperative and postoperative phase of the surgical patient. This role requires comprehensive professional knowledge and skills in conformance with recognized nursing standards and department policies, including the Patient Bill of Rights and JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care and the Nurse Practice Act. The nurse will assess physiological and psychosocial health status, pain, and patient history, and will communicate pertinent information to appropriate staff for continuity of care. Documentation in the patient record must be legible and signed appropriately. The role involves assessing patient/family understanding, identifying desired outcomes, establishing nursing diagnoses and mutually acceptable goals, and formulating and implementing nursing care plans tailored to patient/family needs. The nurse must demonstrate the ability to assess and problem-solve, respond to emergencies, and practice within legal and ethical guidelines. Specific duties include demonstrating proper preoperative process, communication/report, surgical case counting procedures and documentation, aseptic technique, efficient turnover time, proper technique for obtaining blood products, proper patient identification verification, and proper surgical site identification and marking. The nurse will also anticipate surgeon’s needs during surgical procedures and participate in a Professional Nursing Organization.
