About The Position

Provides direct nursing care to clients during the surgical abortion procedure and for recovery care for post-surgical abortion period. The RN works in partnership with the Health Center Team to provide quality patient care and excellent customer service. Participates as a member of a team providing confidential, quality patient services, allowing patients to maintain a sense of dignity, trust and safety. Follows PPFA and the organization’s protocols, policies and procedures and any center-specific policies and procedures. Ensures productivity expectations, customer service and compliance standards are maintained. Abides by the organization’s mission in performing job duties.

Requirements

  • RN license in the state where assigned.
  • 1 year clinical healthcare experience.
  • Must be able to prioritize.
  • Good communication and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Current BLS and ACLS Certificate from a hands on course.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Insurable driving record

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service, eliciting client needs, and educating clients on health center services and community resources.
  • Evaluate clients regarding their risk for STIs.
  • Ensures that any client who requests an abortion is aware that she may change her decision at any time and will be provided with alternatives and will receive accurate information and appropriate referrals.
  • Assist physician and patient during abortion procedures that utilize IV sedation by establishing IV access, performing blood draws, administering medications per physician orders, monitoring patient vital signs and lab work, and completing all required documentation per protocol.
  • Ensure patient electronic records/charts and logs are completed and maintained in a timely, accurate and thorough manner, including staff signatures and initials where required.
  • Notifies physician of any medical problem or other special concerns of client that may relate to the abortion or choice of birth control method.
  • Assist in the set-up and clean-up of exam rooms.
  • May perform blood draws, TB testing, injections, including vaccines, basic ultrasonography for gestational dating after completion of ultrasound training and under the direction of the physician.
  • Dispenses medications to the client as directed by the abortion physician.
  • At the end of each procedure day, secures all medication used in the procedure room in a locked and designated area for pharmaceutical storage.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of all drugs used in the procedure room.
  • Monitor patients in recovery room, including taking vital signs, dispensing medication, giving verbal and written aftercare instructions and birth control information, and reporting signs or symptoms of post abortion complications to the MD on duty.
  • Informs client of need for post-abortion follow-up.
  • Maintains client statistics to be given to on-call staff.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of all drugs that are dispensed in the recovery room.
  • Completes appropriate cleanup of the recovery room at the end of each clinic including but not limited to locking up medications, cleaning recliners, emptying trash.
  • Practices nursing within the scope of a registered nurse and in accordance with agency protocols and policies.
  • Provides education in a non-judgmental manner to patients by providing support and information on reproductive and sexual health issues, including birth control methods and pregnancy options including abortion, STI’s/HIV and safer sex.
  • Consults with organization physician when deviates from standard medical protocols.
  • Complies with all applicable state (Dept of Health, Pharmacy Board, Nursing Board, Medical Board) and federal Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA), and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) standards, infection control, safety, and DEA) regulations.
  • Understands and complies with policies regarding patient rights. Ensures that informed consent has been obtained before any procedures are initiated.
  • Knows and adheres to the requirements of the Woman’s Right to Know Act, parental consent for minors seeking abortion, and the screening and reporting of child abuse.
  • Participate in health center staff meetings, trainings, quality improvement initiatives and emergency drills.
  • Creates and maintains an environment of dignity and safety for patient sensitivity and privacy.
  • Provides direct nursing care to clients.
  • Provides on-call and health center coverage as scheduled.
  • Provides patient management to ensure that patients are provided responsible and efficient care.
  • Ensures that all emergency equipment is available and in proper working order prior to each clinic.
  • Responds quickly and efficiently during patient care emergencies (e.g. assisting patient to floor if fainting to limit patient injury, immediately calling for assistance and emergency cart, efficiently able to insert IV catheter, performing CPR, if indicated).
  • Understands and complies with all pharmacy policies, including those related to medication administration and narcotic handling.
  • Assists in monitoring medical supply inventory in the recovery room.
  • Provides health education for reproductive health issues as needed.
  • Completes all employee training requirements including handling of situations involving conduct that endangers the welfare of minors and mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Takes personal responsibility to remain informed about family planning methods, abortion issues and technology, policies, protocols, procedures, and services offered at our health centers.
  • Adhere to affiliate policies and procedures including meetings and training requirements, ensuring punctuality and attendance, and following personnel policies.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate credentials and certifications.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment by following through on tasks, taking initiative, working with the team and identifying solutions.
