About The Position

The ASC Operating Room and PACU nurses work collaboratively with the physicians and the anesthesia health care providers to determine patient needs undergoing surgical procedures and to assume responsibility for patient care, document and evaluate the effectiveness of nursing actions and ensure a safe environment of care. The nurse will be knowledgeable about the scrub and circulation duties performed in the ASC.

Requirements

  • Vocational/Technical Degree as a Registered Nurse is required
  • Current RN License in the state of Wisconsin
  • BLS and CPR certification is required
  • Knowledge of state, federal, JCAHO regulations
  • Effective communication skills; verbal and written
  • Ability to develop good working relationships with physicians and staff
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced medical facility while adhering to HIPAA compliance regulations
  • Strong aptitude with computer software
  • Must be outgoing and cordial; demonstrated through solid customer service skills/experience
  • Must be flexible for changing job requirements

Nice To Haves

  • ACLS certification is preferred; must be obtained within one year of employment

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of: Environment of Care (Safety, Security, Haz Mat/Waste, Emergency Preparedness, Med Equipment)
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of: Infection Control (Department-specific policies and procedures, personal protective equipment, CDC Hand Washing Guidelines, QAPI program)
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of: Patient Rights (Patient Rights and Responsibilities, Confidentiality Policies – HIPAA, Ethical Issue Resolution)
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of: Patient Safety (Verbal orders, prevention of fires, medication safety, critical test results, correct site/patient/procedure verification, bed rail safety, safe transport of monitored patient)
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of: Specimen handling (accurate labeling and handling, disposition of surgical specimens)
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of: IV Therapy (Insertion, Aseptic technique, Site, Dressing, Tubing changes, Use of pumps)
  • Performs age-specific nursing assessments
  • Demonstrates age-appropriate communication skills
  • Demonstrates ability to interpret arrhythmias and initiate age-specific responses
  • Demonstrates ability to assess age-specific safety issues and implements appropriate safety devices
  • Demonstrates ability to interpret patient data and react to changes in the patient’s condition

  • Completes documentation in an accurate and timely manner
  • Provides support and comfort to preoperative patients
  • Demonstrates proficiency in care of patients receiving conscious sedation
  • Assists physician during procedures; carries out physician orders
  • Calls patients pre-operatively for pre-admission directives and post-operative follow-up care
