About The Position

Shrub Oak International School (SOIS) is a therapeutic day and residential school for autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions. Located in northern Westchester County, Shrub Oak offers unparalleled educational opportunities for autistic students in a family-centric, supportive environment. Requirements

  • Current NYS Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in good professional standing, required
  • Minimum 1 year of experience as an RN working with children/adolescents, required
  • Ability to Complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training for Schools (TCIS) in its entirety, required
  • Experience working with children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or co-occurring conditions.
  • Experience working in a therapeutic or residential school setting.
  • Experience with crisis management and first-aid.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or higher, preferred.
  • Training in psychiatric nursing or experience in psychiatric care, preferred.
  • Experience working with youth with autism and/or psychiatric illness, preferred.
  • Ability to communicate in a second language (Spanish, etc.), preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively, learn new skills quickly, and build strong relationships with students, peers, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Collaborate across departments and with the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to support students’ holistic physical and emotional health.
  • Monitor student wellness, performs routine and as‑needed medical assessments, and provides crisis response and first aid, including coordination with EMS.
  • Manage a medical caseload by coordinating with guardians, primary and specialist providers, pharmacies, nutritionists, and food services.
  • Schedule medical, dental, vision, and lab appointments; tracks vitals; administers medications; and conducts body‑mark checks at admission, discharge, and after significant incidents.
  • Provide health education to students directly and through Direct Support Professionals to promote healthy lifestyle habits.
  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team including psychiatric, clinical, educational, and direct care staff to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Demonstrates cultural competence, professionalism, and the ability to engage effectively with diverse individuals and communities.
  • Able to work flexibly and adapt.
