About The Position
This role involves providing 1:1 nursing care for an elementary-aged student with complex respiratory needs, including tracheostomy and ventilator dependency, within a school setting. The Registered Nurse (RN) will monitor the student's health status, administer medications and treatments, respond to emergencies, and maintain accurate health records. Collaboration with teachers, administrators, therapists, and families is essential to support the student's health and educational goals. The position offers the opportunity to build a meaningful, long-term relationship with the student and school community, providing consistent nursing support throughout the school year. The classroom environment serves students with cognitive impairments, requiring collaboration with educational staff and occasional support with redirection strategies to maintain a safe learning environment. Requirements
- Active, unrestricted Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license
- BLS certification (American Heart Association or Red Cross) within 90 days of hire
- Background check and fingerprinting will be required for this role
Nice To Haves
- Experience with tracheostomy and ventilator care strongly preferred
- Experience working with pediatric patients, school settings, or medically complex individuals preferred
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with students, families, and school staff
Responsibilities
- Providing 1:1 nursing care for a student with complex respiratory needs throughout the school day
- Monitoring health status and responding to changes in condition
- Managing tracheostomy and ventilator-related care according to physician orders and care plans
- Administering medications and treatments as prescribed
- Assessing and responding to illness, injuries, or medical emergencies during the school day
- Maintaining accurate health records and documenting care provided
- Collaborating with teachers, administrators, therapists, and families to support the student’s health and educational goals
- Supporting safe participation in classroom activities, transportation, and school routines
- Serving as a health resource for school staff and assisting with health-related needs as appropriate
