About The Position

The primary responsibility of the Registered Nurse (RN) is to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility during their tour of duty, ensuring the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. The RN assists the Director of Nursing Services in directing nursing activities, developing and updating policies and procedures, and ensuring that reference materials and the Nursing Service Procedures Manual are current. They also participate in the facility's quality assurance program, assist with resident assessments and care plans, and manage administrative duties. The role involves supervising nursing staff, ensuring adequate staffing levels, and fostering a positive work environment. The RN provides direct nursing care as needed, monitors medication passes and treatment schedules, and ensures safety and sanitation standards are met. They also participate in staff development and continuing education.

Requirements

  • Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
  • 2 years or more experience, preferably in a long-term care facility.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to read technical procedures.
  • Ability to read and comprehend policy and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
  • Ability to solve practical problems.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.

  • Current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an RN in this state.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Must maintain all required continuing education/licensing.
  • Must remain in good standing with the State Board of Nursing at all times.
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately.
  • Must function independently, and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility.
  • Ensure quality care is maintained in accordance with federal, state, and local standards.

  • Make reports and recommendations to the Director of Nursing.
  • Participate in the facility's quality assurance program.
  • Participate in facility surveys and assist with resident discharge plans.
  • Attend committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Quality Assessment).
  • Ensure sufficient licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants are available.
  • Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses.
  • Monitor absenteeism and ensure adequate staffing.
  • Ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Review complaints and grievances from department personnel.
  • Create and maintain a positive work environment.
  • Participate in employee performance evaluations.
  • Ensure departmental disciplinary action is administered fairly.
  • Report occupational exposures and suspected fraud.
  • Inform nursing staff of new admissions and ensure rooms are ready.
  • Make rounds with physicians and encourage timely documentation.
  • Consult with residents, families, and physicians on care plans.
  • Notify physicians and next-of-kin of changes in resident condition.
  • Visit residents daily to assess physical and emotional status.
  • Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
  • Review nurses' notes for accuracy and completeness.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary, including starting IVs and obtaining specimens.
  • Take vital signs and blood pressures.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents.
  • Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules.
  • Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety.
  • Ensure residents needing assistance are checked frequently.
  • Participate in developing and conducting in-service training classes.
  • Assist with clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
  • Attend continuing education programs.
  • Assist in developing safety standards for the nursing department.
  • Identify and classify tasks with potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Ensure personnel use personal protective equipment correctly.
  • Monitor staff adherence to safety regulations.
  • Ensure work areas are clean and sanitary.
  • Ensure residents' rooms and treatment areas are clean, safe, and sanitary.
  • Ensure handwashing and hand hygiene procedures are followed.
  • Participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
  • Participate in the infection control program.
  • Ensure isolation precautions are followed when necessary.
  • Participate in procedures for reporting hazardous conditions.
  • Ensure safety equipment is used when moving residents.
  • Recommend equipment and supply needs.
  • Ensure adequate stock levels of medications and supplies.
  • Participate in developing a preventive maintenance program for equipment.
  • Ensure safe operation of nursing service equipment.
  • Monitor nursing procedures to prevent waste of supplies.
  • Ensure MSDSs are on file for hazardous chemicals.
  • Participate in resident assessments and care plan development.
  • Review resident care plans for appropriate goals and revisions.
  • Ensure all personnel are aware of and follow resident care plans.
  • Assist with MDS and RAP/Trigger implementation.
  • Review resident treatments to ensure they align with care plans.
  • Keep abreast of economic conditions and recommend adjustments to nursing services.
  • Report suspected fraud related to billings, cost reports, etc.
  • Assist with the overall supervision and management of the nursing staff.
