Riverside Smithfield Hospital, opening in early 2026, is a new facility located on a 27-acre medical campus in Smithfield, Virginia. This 200,000-square-foot, three-story hospital offers modern facilities and comprehensive medical services, including an Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging Services, 38 Medical/Surgical beds, 12 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, and 4 Operating Rooms. The hospital aims to bring high-quality healthcare closer to home for Isle of Wight County residents. This role is part of an exciting opportunity to shape the future of healthcare in Smithfield, delivering compassionate, patient-centered care in a state-of-the-art environment.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) or compact state Upon Hire
  • CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) Upon Hire
  • ACLS Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) within 90 Days
  • PALS Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) within 180 Days

Responsibilities

  • Works under the supervision of the Nurse manager and the Director and is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating the total nursing care of assigned patients.
  • May work in a variety of settings in the Critical Care/Telemetry Complex and roles within Riverside Health System.
  • Utilizes communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making to create a care plan for each patient based on physiological, psychosocial and cultural diversity.
  • Responsible for supervising and delegating non-professional personnel working directly with him/her to ensure optimum patient care.
  • Must demonstrate competence in dealing with age related needs of the specific patient populations served in the Critical Care/Telemetry units/departments.
  • Works under the direction of leadership and a multi-disciplinary team to provide a comprehensive range of services or clinical care associated with and in accordance with standards of excellence established by Riverside Health system and facility goals and strategic plans.
  • Demonstrates ability to assess patient clinical and psychosocial needs by applying standards of practice as it relates to the specialty or patient population served in the Critical Care/Telemetry units/departments.
  • Partners with patients and families to develop, implement and evaluate plan of care, treatments and procedures that contribute to the physiological and psychosocial outcomes of the patient.
  • Assesses and incorporates evidence-based standards of practice.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team in the coordination care.
  • Facilitates safe patient transitions to the next care setting as part of plan of care.
  • Demonstrates understanding of diverse patient care populations and ability to modify education method to ensure patient/family comprehension.
  • Educates by assuming responsibility to individualize and coordinate patient education, and discharge specific education that includes family/caregiver.
  • Evaluates for patient comprehension and documents.
  • Ability to delegate and prioritize tasks appropriately to facilitate quality patient care and ensure patient care needs are met.
  • Able to recognize and respond to emergency situations.
  • Evaluates own needs for support and uses identified systems to meet need.
  • Accurately completes all required clinical and quality documentation consistently per RHS standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency to facilitate patient throughput to assure patients receive consistent, competent, and ethical care.
  • Focuses on quality outcomes of patient care when addressing customer’s needs to include current evidence based practice and quality measures.
