About The Position

This full-time Registered Nurse position at Wallens Ridge State Prison involves providing comprehensive nursing care to adult institutional patients. Responsibilities include utilizing the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating), delivering 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine services, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care. The role requires meticulous documentation in health records, maintaining confidentiality, and collaborating with other departments. Registered Nurses are expected to delegate tasks, manage workload, and be available to provide coverage across various hours, days, and locations to meet the institution's needs. The position emphasizes evidence-based nursing care and continuous professional development through education and certification, with a specific focus on correctional nursing. Assignments may include other duties or locations as required by the Department's clinical and administrative demands.

Requirements

  • Possess and maintain valid unrestricted Virginia RN license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not yet licensed, NCLEX-RN Exam must be scheduled at time of application).
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care within adult institutions utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per the standards of practice.
  • Achieve standard of care through 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care.
  • Document all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality.
  • Interface with other departments on an as-needed basis.
  • Delegate tasks/workload.
  • Work hours, days, and locations as assigned and provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
  • Provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Accept assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
