The Registered Nurse on 6 Central provides comprehensive, evidence-based nursing care to General Medicine patients and adults and children undergoing advanced epilepsy evaluation. The blended unit combines general medical nursing with specialized care in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, offering opportunities to develop expertise in seizure recognition, epilepsy diagnostics, patient safety, and interdisciplinary neurological care. Epilepsy assignments may involve continuous EEG monitoring, medication tapering, seizure localization, intracranial monitoring, and evaluation for epilepsy surgery. These assignments typically have a patient ratio of approximately 1:3 to support close observation and specialized monitoring. Nurses receive dedicated epilepsy-focused orientation, including education in seizure recognition and response, medication-withholding workflows, emergency medications, status epilepticus protocols, patient safety, and specialized monitoring processes; prior epilepsy experience is not required. 6 Central is home to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and is part of the F.E. Dreifuss Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, a Level 4 Epilepsy Center. The unit has an eight-bed monitoring unit serving adult and pediatric populations. Nurses work collaboratively with epileptologists, physicians, epilepsy specialists, and ancillary teams, and participate in clinical discussions and patient planning. Professional growth opportunities include clinical career pathways, shared governance, nursing research, quality improvement, leadership development, and support for pursuing Epilepsy Nursing Certification. The Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager are regularly present on the unit. Relocation assistance may be available for qualified candidates.
