About The Position

The Registered Nurse in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (2N BAY) collaborates with physicians to develop and implement patient care plans aimed at returning patients to optimal health. This role involves providing direct bedside nursing care, executing medical orders, and delegating tasks to ancillary staff such as Nurse Assistants and Patient Care Associates. The nurse is responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of the care plan and ensuring patient needs are met throughout their stay and during discharge or transfer. Additionally, the position emphasizes professional growth through continuous education and mentorship of new staff and students. The role also involves functioning as a team leader to ensure appropriate patient placement and assignment delegation within the unit.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and holding a current license to practice in the state of Michigan.
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association or Red Cross
  • Must satisfactorily complete ACLS course and Critical Care course within one year of hire/transfer
  • Must satisfactorily complete first available Basic Dysrhythmia course

Nice To Haves

  • Six-month experience in acute care setting or equivalent
  • Critical Care Registered Nurse

Responsibilities

  • Integrates evidence-based knowledge into practice.
  • Delegates and coordinates tasks and assignments of nursing care.
  • Facilitates/participates in patient conferences.
  • Identifies and provides the means to meet patients’ ongoing and discharge/transfer teaching needs by communicating with the appropriate resource persons and attending discharge/transfer planning conferences.
  • Assumes the responsibility for professional growth by seeking out educational opportunities and utilizing programs in the hospital or elsewhere in the community.
  • Teaches and/or guides professional and ancillary personnel.
  • Precepts/mentors new employees and students.
  • Functions as a team leader to ensure proper patient placement and delegation of assignments.
  • Effectively manages the critical care of the patient with hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Accurately and effectively administers high risk medications.
  • Effectively monitors and manages the care of the patient with hemodynamic instability.
  • Effectively monitors and manages the care of the patient with respiratory instability including mechanical ventilation.
  • Actively participates in unit quality measures.
  • Incorporates Evidence Based Practice in patient care.
  • Promotes compassion and a therapeutic environment.
