About The Position

Provides professional nursing care to patients within an assigned unit/area utilizing the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. This role involves a twelve (12) week assignment in accordance with Float Pool staffing guidelines and the needs of the unit. The Registered Nurse will provide nursing care according to the medical regime and appropriate nursing interventions for patients' conditions, adhering to established standards, policies, and procedures, including the care of medicine and surgery patients. The position requires initiating assessments based on patient problems, physician diagnoses, and the functional health framework upon admission and assignment, collecting key information from patients, families, and medical reports. The nurse will determine nursing diagnoses and care priorities, including patient teaching, discharge planning, and age-specific needs. They will demonstrate knowledge and skills in technical, interpersonal, and critical thinking to provide care, maintain competency, and manage patients with common conditions in the assigned unit. This includes performing clinical rounds, ongoing assessments, re-prioritizing care, and involving families in assessment activities. The role involves performing therapeutic nursing interventions as ordered by the Physician, consistent with standards of care and practice, risk management, infection control, and patient safety. Specific duties include admission/assessment interventions, medication administration (IM, IV, SQ, PO), pain management, preparing and maintaining records, maintaining a safe environment, and adhering to policies and standards. The nurse will evaluate the impact of interventions and document patient progress. They will also prepare equipment, assist physicians with treatments, perform specialized duties, respond to medical emergencies, initiate CPR/BLS/ACLS, provide patient/family teaching, maintain medical records, utilize patient computer systems, and collaborate with hospital staff regarding patient needs. Additionally, the role includes providing instruction and supervision to LPNs and support personnel, assisting with the orientation of new staff and students, transporting patients and equipment, collaborating with forensic teams and security for patients in custody, completing required training, and maintaining necessary licensures and certifications. The position requires working a flexible schedule within the assigned service line according to float pool guidelines.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved nursing school/program.
  • Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the neonate, infant, toddler, preschooler, school age, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient population as specialty assignment dictates.
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure to work in state of TN.
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support BLS Required
  • Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED CPR Required
  • Minimum 2 years experience recent experience as a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities

  • Provides nursing care according to the medical regime and the nursing intervention appropriate for the patients' conditions and according to established standards, policies and procedures including care of the medicine and surgery patient.

  • Determines which standards of care and practice apply to the patient.
  • Documents assessment, including nursing diagnoses or other clinical judgments.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and technical, interpersonal and critical thinking skills to provide care, maintain clinical competency and meet age-specific patient needs within the unit.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage the care of patients with conditions common to the assigned unit.
  • Performs clinical rounds and completes ongoing assessments according to nursing division policy and/or as determined by patient condition, re-prioritizes care based on new information, continues to update nursing diagnoses, and involves family and/or other significant individuals in assessment activities.
  • Assesses plans and implements care of assigned patients.
  • Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as ordered by the Physician, consistent with primary and population-specific standards of care and practice, with consideration given to knowledge gained from the initial and ongoing assessment of the patient.
  • Consistent with nursing division policies and procedures, demonstrated competencies, and with consideration given to risk management, infection control practices, and patient safety practices.
  • Consistent with the nature of the assigned unit, including but not limited to, admission/assessment interventions, administration of medication (IM, IV, SQ, PO), pain management measures.
  • Prepares and maintains required records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel.
  • Adheres to established policies, compliance/quality improvement, and safety, environment and infection control standards.
  • Determines the impact of nursing interventions on the patient's condition and recognizes the patient's progress towards meeting desired outcomes.
  • Documents care based on standards of care and practice and/or clinical priorities for documentation including, assessment and ongoing assessment findings, updated clinical priorities for documentation, therapeutic nursing interventions with special attention to patient education and discharge planning interventions, and patient’s response to interventions and progress towards outcomes are noted.
  • Prepares equipment/supplies and assists physician during treatments, procedures and examinations.
  • Performs specialized duties applicable to assigned unit.
  • Responds and/or participates with medical emergencies.
  • Initiates and/or assists with CPR/BLS/ACLS as required.
  • Provides teaching to patient/family in the care of disease/condition.
  • Develops and implements patient teaching outlines including objectives, content, teaching strategies and evaluation of patient progress.
  • Maintains patient medical records; documents patient status and care given; performs charting duties; records activities and observations.
  • Utilizes patient computer systems to enter and retrieve data.
  • Confers and works collaboratively with patient/family/hospital staff regarding all aspects of patient needs (i.e., patient admission/discharge of/transfer process, discharge planning, referrals, coordinating exams/therapy/rehab, requisitions for supplies, obtains medical records, etc.) in a customer responsive and courteous manner, in compliance with Premier Behavior Standards and promoting patient/customer satisfaction.
  • Provides instruction, assigns and supervises LPN and other support personnel assigned to unit to complete the initial and ongoing assessments of patients and to provide clinical assistance as needed.
  • Assists in the orientation and oversee the supervision of new staff members and students when they provide patient care, treatment, and services as part of their training.
  • Transports monitored patients, specimens, equipment and supplies to and from various areas.
  • Collaborates with forensic team and security to provide safe environment for patients in custody.
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements.
  • Maintains required licensures/certifications required within assigned units/areas.
  • Works flexible work schedule within assigned service line in accordance with float pool staffing guidelines.
