The Registered Nurse in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) provides compassionate, expert care to critically ill patients with complex cardiovascular conditions, including heart failure exacerbations, coronary artery disease, STEMI, pulmonary hypertension, cardiogenic shock, heart blocks, and post-cardiac arrest recovery. The role is based in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment and involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across the health system. Nurses care for patients requiring advanced therapies and technologies such as Impella devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, LVADs, ventilator support, and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Typical nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:2, with 1:1 assignments in some cases for the most critically ill patients. A dedicated charge nurse without a patient assignment provides additional team support. The position offers a rotating schedule or an all-night shift option, with no call requirements. UVA Health describes the CCU as a collaborative, team-focused academic medical center environment that supports clinical excellence, innovation, education, and professional development. Nurses are encouraged to ask questions and grow professionally while delivering outstanding patient care.
