About The Position

The City of Lynchburg is seeking a qualified hourly Registered Nurse to provide medical services to residents in a secure detention facility and group homes. This role involves conducting health assessments, administering treatments, providing counseling, and educating residents on health-related topics relevant to adolescent growth and development. The nurse will act as a primary health resource for facility staff, manage medical supplies, and maintain health records, ensuring compliance with HIPPA regulations.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Two years of successful experience in graduate nursing, hospital work or related field.
  • Possession of certificate as a registered professional nurse as issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Possession of valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record.
  • Must have Criminal Record Check and reference checks completed prior to employment.
  • Must have Child Protective Services check initiated prior to employment.
  • Must have tuberculin and drug screen as part of physical examination prior to onset of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as the official health/medical resource to the detention/group home staff as related to control or communicable diseases, health and medical problems of detainees/residents, and other relevant health problems.
  • Performs routine physical assessments on detainees and residents prior to their 59th day.
  • Administers TB tests to detainees/residents, reads results and makes appropriate recommendations. Also responsible for staff TB tests.
  • Provides liaison activities with other health care providers in the community in consultation with Caseworkers and/or Parents, as related to facility and resident healthcare.
  • Makes appointments and may accompany detainees to various health/medical appointments, including emergency room visits.
  • Obtains medical history, including possible allergies, chronic health problems, drug/alcohol abuse, and other pertinent health information of detainees/residents.
  • Holds "sick-call" for detainees/residents, using discretion and judgment regarding referral to other health professionals.
  • Gives and/or observes the administering of medication and performs treatment recommended by health professionals.
  • Performs first-aid measures when needed.
  • Consults with other professionals (i.e. doctors, nurses, probation officers, mental health, caseworkers, social workers, etc.) and parents regarding detainee's physical and emotional condition.
  • Provides information and maintains health records, including copies of detention/group home physical examinations, to other relevant professionals involved with the detainees.
  • Requisitions, dispenses and inventories medical supplies, prescriptions and over-the-counter medications for detention/group home.
  • Conducts and/or arranges classes for detainees/residents on general health and hygiene, including but not limited to drug abuse, venereal diseases, and life skills dealing with health issues.
  • Assists in connecting detainees/residents with community health resources and programs in preparation for their return to the community.
  • Follows all HIPPA rules and guidelines for the dissemination of all medical services to ensure detainee/resident confidentiality.
  • May direct and monitor the work of part-time nurses, interns and trainees.
