About The Position

The Pavilion at McLean Hospital is the premiere residential program in the country providing comprehensive diagnostic evaluations for adults 18 and older with a wide range of complex psychiatric illnesses including depression, anxiety, OCD, substance use, and contributing personality issues. This role utilizes the nursing process to provide for immediate and long-term nursing care needs of patients within the standards of the department, hospital, and regulatory agencies. The Registered Nurse will assess patients' needs, plan and implement nursing care interventions, and evaluate the effectiveness of those interventions. This role also involves a leadership component in organizing and providing patient care, including directing and supervising MHSs, delegating care interventions, and assuming a leadership role in medical and psychiatric emergencies. Additionally, the nurse will provide for the teaching needs of patients and their significant others and maintain a commitment to professional growth and competency. The position requires effective interpersonal communication and contributes to the productivity and cost-effectiveness of the hospital, department, and unit.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Registered Nurse [RN - State License] - Generic - HR Only required.
  • MR safety certification.
  • Standard blood draw procedures (excluding IV placement).
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills to use a variety of electronic or online systems for communication, clinical and administrative purposes.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree Nursing preferred.
  • One year medical/psychiatric experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately assesses patients’ needs, utilizing multiple data sources to determine actual/potential health problems and functional status, identifying patient strengths using a Recovery Oriented Framework, and performing point of care testing.
  • Communicates findings effectively to members of the healthcare team, with documentation reflecting response to intervention and demonstrating an understanding of patients’ response to treatment interventions.
  • Identifies patient behaviors that contribute to the development of a crisis and utilizes non-verbal and verbal techniques to de-escalate a crisis situation.
  • Accurately plans nursing interventions for assigned patients, modifying and individualizing the Nursing Plan of Care and protocols, and participating in the development of the multidisciplinary treatment plan.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize patient care needs and partners with patients/families to support recovery goals.
  • Provides and implements nursing care interventions, establishing a therapeutic alliance with assigned patients.
  • Demonstrates safe, accurate, and timely medication administration using BMV scanning and reviews physician orders in a timely manner.
  • Promotes interventions that provide the least-restrictive alternatives and recovery-oriented goals, and participates in leading patient groups.
  • Accurately evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care interventions, with documentation on the Nursing Plan of Care, protocols, and Assessment Flowsheet reflecting response to intervention.
  • Accurately communicates patients’ clinical status at clinical team rounds and change of shift reports, utilizing evidence-based nursing knowledge to guide practice decisions.
  • Provides a leadership role in organizing and providing patient care, including direction and supervision of MHSs and delegation of care interventions.
  • Assumes a leadership role in medical and psychiatric emergencies and promotes/provides for critical incident de-briefing following emergency events.
  • Anticipates acute milieu problems and delegates staff appropriately, and participates in the training and education of RNs, MHSs, and other healthcare providers.
  • Provides for teaching needs of patient and significant others, including health teaching related to patient needs and recovery goals, documenting teaching in the patient’s record, and informing the treatment team of patients and significant others’ learning needs.
  • Maintains a commitment to professional growth and competency, completing mandatory in-service requirements, maintaining competency for treating patient population, seeking constructive feedback, and identifying strengths and areas for professional/practice development with supervisor.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal communication, maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality, communicating positively, supportively, and with courtesy to patients and staff, and presenting self in a positive and professional manner.
  • Contributes to the productivity and cost-effectiveness of the hospital, department, and unit through effective time management and economical management of services and supplies.
  • Notifies shift coordinator/charge nurse of availability for additional assignments.
