The Registered Nurse in the Operating Room (OR) is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, and patient outcome) during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of the surgical patient. This role requires adherence to recognized nursing standards, department policies, the Patient Bill of Rights, JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care, and the Nurse Practice Act. The nurse will assess patients' physiological and psychosocial health status, including pain assessment, and complete patient histories. They will communicate pertinent information to appropriate staff for continuity of care, document information legibly in patient records, and assess patient/family understanding of care. The nurse will establish nursing diagnoses, identify desired patient outcomes, and set mutually acceptable patient/family goals. They will formulate and implement nursing care plans tailored to patient/family needs, demonstrating the ability to assess and problem-solve. Responsibilities also include responding to emergencies, practicing within legal and ethical guidelines, and performing nursing actions with accountability, flexibility, and safe judgment. The role involves continually adjusting care plans based on patient/family data, demonstrating proper preoperative process, surgical case counting, aseptic technique, efficient turnover time, obtaining blood products, patient identification verification, surgical site identification and marking, and anticipating surgeon’s needs. Participation in a Professional Nursing Organization is also expected.
