Registered Nurse (Part-Time): Sussex State Prison
About The Position
This is a part-time Registered Nurse position at Sussex State Prison, offering a flexible staffing arrangement for nurses seeking additional hours, averaging no more than 29 hours per week. The role involves providing nursing care within adult correctional institutions using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Services include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life support/emergency care. All pertinent information must be documented in the health record with strict confidentiality. The Registered Nurse will interface with other departments as needed, delegate tasks, and work assigned hours, days, and locations. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet clinical and administrative needs. This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, with the wage employment period resetting annually on May 1. This wage position offers no state benefits. The position is currently approved for a temporary enhanced hourly rate due to critical staffing needs.
Requirements
- Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia RN license (if a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not yet licensed, NCLEX-RN Exam must be scheduled at time of application).
- Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire.

Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care within adult institutions by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per the standards of practice.
- Utilize a multitude of services to include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care.
- Document all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality.
- Interface with other departments on an as-needed basis.
- Delegate tasks/workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned.
- Provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
- Provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
- Accept assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
