About The Position

This Registered Nurse position is a 0.4 FTE role, working 16 hours per week, located in San Jose, CA. The role involves a variety of duties including overseeing non-licensed staff, patient triage, contributing to health center productivity, and providing direct patient care in areas such as in-clinic abortions, sexual and reproductive health, and centralized follow-up. The nurse will also provide triage services through a Response Center, handling patient calls and emails. The responsibilities are divided into several key areas: General Duties: Ensuring non-licensed staff competency in back office/lab skills, providing input for their performance reviews, overseeing patient triage for medical problems and appointment scheduling for both reproductive health and primary care, collaborating with the Center Manager to facilitate flow and triage, contributing to health center productivity goals, and upholding customer service standards. In Clinic Abortion Duties: Preparing the recovery room, administering pre-operative and post-operative medications, assessing post-operative patients for pain, bleeding, and complications, overseeing Health Support Staff (HSS) functions (vital signs, post-operative instructions, birth control education), providing intraoperative sedation and patient monitoring, and maintaining emergency cart and equipment. Sexual and Reproductive Health Duties: Following standardized procedures for hormonal contraception, Emergency Contraception (EC), and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) screening; providing patient education, counseling, lab work, and ultrasound for medication abortions; and administering immunizations like the HPV vaccination. Centralized Follow-Up RN Duties: Accepting and signing off on lab reports (GC/CT, pap, etc.), evaluating and developing follow-up plans, referring complex cases to clinicians, and verifying appropriate and timely handling of all lab reports. Triage RN - Response Center Duties: Providing advice and triage services for reproductive health and primary care patients, identifying medical urgency, scheduling appointments, answering calls from the Response Center queue according to policy, and responding to patient emails via the Patient Portal in HER.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Nursing Program
  • Current CA State RN license
  • Current BLS Certificate
  • Current experience using computer and mouse
  • Experience using a Microsoft Windows based program and willing to learn new computer skills
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and locations
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Ability to communicate effectively

  • Current ACLS Certificate (CFU RNs exempt)

Responsibilities

  • Assuring non-licensed staff are qualified in performing back office/lab skills and achieve core competency levels on an annual basis
  • Providing input for the medical component of the non-licensed staff performance reviews
  • Overseeing patient triage for medical problems and acute versus routine appointments for both reproductive health and primary care patients
  • Working with Center Manager or designee to facilitate flow and triage
  • Contributing to achieving health center productivity goals
  • Demonstrating PPMM customer service standards
  • Preparing recovery room for all in clinic abortion services
  • Preparing pre-operative medications
  • Assessing post-operative patients for pain and bleeding control and early detection of complications
  • Overseeing HSS functions: vital signs, post-operative instructions, education of patient identified birth control method
  • Providing intraoperative sedation medication and patient monitoring
  • Providing post-operative medications
  • Maintaining and ensuring emergency cart and equipment are stocked and current
  • Following standardized procedures for patient visits: hormonal contraception, Emergency Contraception (EC), and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) screening
  • Providing patient education, counseling, lab work and ultrasound for medication abortions
  • Providing immunizations per approved guidelines and standardized procedures, such as HPV vaccination
  • Accepting and signing-off GC/CT, pap and other designated lab reports from clinician’s PAQs
  • Evaluating and developing plan for follow up
  • Referring paps/other labs that are outside the scope of CFU RN to the health centers’ clinicians
  • Verifying that all lab reports are handled appropriately and within the appropriate time frame
  • Providing advice/triage services to both reproductive health and primary care patients
  • Identifying medical urgency and scheduling appointments with the health centers
  • Answering all calls placed in queue by Response Center as outlined in the Triage Policy
  • Responding to patient emails through the Patient Portal in HER
