About The Position

The Alex is a community-based, not-for-profit organization that has been providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs since 1973. They serve individuals and families facing barriers to traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Their services are based on principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care. The Community Health Bus offers team-based primary health care and integrated social supports, including primary care assessment, wound care, chronic disease support, and connections to resources. The Mobile Registered Nurse (RN) reports to the Program Manager and works with individuals with complex mental health and psychosocial needs, focusing on patient-centered care. In collaboration with other healthcare professionals, the RN plays a key role in the mobile clinic's operations, including triage, assessment, treatment, case management, and care coordination. This role involves outreach to youth and adult populations via a mobile medical bus, providing services such as sexual and reproductive health care, laboratory procedures, mental health support, chronic disease management, and episodic care. A portion of the role also involves working on the Diabetes Mobile Clinic, a partnership with the University of Calgary.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited degree program in nursing.
  • Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
  • Class 5 driver’s license, personal vehicle for business use, and a clean 3-year drivers abstract are required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
  • A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and child welfare intervention check are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Ideally a minimum of two (2) years Nursing experience.
  • Experience in areas such as mental health, primary care, and/or sexual and reproductive care would be an asset.
  • Preference would be given to those with experience working with clients with psychosocial complexity.
  • Experience with community outreach and crisis intervention is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of social services and non-profit services in Calgary is an asset.
  • Advanced foot care course and experience in diabetes care are assets.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally sensitive nursing services that are responsive and adaptable in meeting the needs of a vulnerable population.
  • Perform appropriate assessments, treatments, education, referral, urgent response, and triage activities.
  • Advocate for the unique needs of clients to a variety of community partners.
  • Document outreach encounters accurately and use data to inform clinical decisions, service planning, and advocacy for individual and population health improvements.
  • Work collaboratively and in consultation with other Alex Team Members, community agencies, and referral sources.
  • Participate in health education, health promotion, and outreach activities.
  • Provide inclusive and confidential care related to contraception, STI prevention and testing/treatment, and healthy relationships.
  • Mental health screening, support, safety planning, and referrals.
  • Engage in evaluation and quality improvement activities as directed by The Alex.
  • Perform laboratory procedures including phlebotomy and prepare specimens for transport.
  • Provide assessment, education, and support for clients managing chronic conditions.
  • Use Point-of-Care Testing tools such as HbA1C, blood glucose testing, pregnancy testing, urinalysis, tonometry, and imaging with a retinal camera (training will be provided).
  • Schedule appointments for patients with internal and external providers for clinical tests, procedures, consultations, and follow-up as directed.
  • Assist with data collection and entry as directed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
