About The Position

Provides direct and indirect patient care through application of nursing process. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates skin, wound, ostomy, and continence care throughout system. Serves as clinical resource and consultant to other healthcare professionals for care of children ages birth to 21 years. Guides and supervises assigned nursing personnel, collaborates with other healthcare professionals, coordinates ancillary staff, and functions within Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's policies and procedures framework within legal framework of the state. Sets standards of care for patients who need wound and/or ostomy nursing.

Requirements

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the single State of Georgia or Multi-State through the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of employment
  • Leadership ability in an autonomous role
  • Ability to work with and direct others in care of critically ill pediatric patients by setting priorities, making decisions, and delivering appropriate care
  • Thorough knowledge of system policies and procedures and standards of care
  • Thorough knowledge of procedures performed on nursing unit with ability to assist other staff members and physicians
  • Current knowledge and skill related to care and support of pediatric patients normally cared for on assigned nursing unit
  • Knowledge and skill related to care and support of pediatric wound, ostomy, and continence nursing patients using evidence-based practices and guidelines
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Basic Windows Assessment at 80% or higher rating within 30 days of employment

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate from an accredited Wound Ostomy Nursing Education Program
  • Minimum 2 years experience in pediatric nursing
  • Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse (CWON) within one year of starting school.
  • Continence is optional
  • Enroll in Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse (CWON) program within 90 days of employment

Responsibilities

  • Serves as primary patient educator for pediatric patient undergoing new ostomy or continent diversion.
  • Provides consultation with assistance to staff regarding management of pediatric patients with chronic wounds, acute wounds, risk for and/or actual pressure ulcers, draining wounds and/or fistulas, and skin breakdown.
  • Provides consultation with assistance to staff regarding management of pediatric patients with established ostomies for peristomal skin breakdown, ostomy care troubleshooting, ostomy product management, education and counseling, and outpatient referral.
  • Provides consultation with assistance to staff regarding skin management and troubleshooting of pediatric patients with percutaneous tubes.
  • Serves as consultant regarding management of pediatric patients with fecal or urinary incontinence with and without skin breakdown.
  • Performs conservative sharp wound debridement of nonviable tissue when indicated.
  • Remains abreast of current practices, trends, and methodologies relating to evidence-based neonatal and pediatric nursing care through departmental annual wound ostomy nurse competency evaluation.
  • Assists staff to maintain current knowledge and competence in areas of pediatric skin, wound, ostomy, and continence care through staff orientation, annual competencies, and formal/informal staff in-services and presentations.
  • Provides assistance to devise and revise educational materials and learning experiences for staff, patients, and families.
  • Collaborates in development, revision, and implementation of policies, procedures, and guidelines related to pediatric skin, wound, ostomy, and continence care.
  • Participates in analysis of stock/non-stock items, recommends appropriate additions and deletions, and conducts product evaluations to ensure quality and cost effectiveness of products used for pediatric skin, wound, ostomy, and continence care.
  • Contributes to research studies related to pediatric skin, wound, ostomy, and continence care when feasible.
  • Serves as clinical preceptor for undergraduate and graduate nursing students.
  • Serves on agency-wide committees and participates in agency-wide projects as requested.
  • Aids in coordinator of ancillary needs and serves as a clinical resource expert related to the wound ostomy specialty.
