About The Position

This position is for a Registered Nurse (RN) on the Vascular Surgery/Medical Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at Mayo Clinic. The unit is a 29-bed specialty unit caring for progressive and general care adult vascular patients and monitored medical patients. Responsibilities include caring for patients who have undergone vascular surgery (e.g., abdominal aneurysm repair, arterial bypass, endarterectomy, amputation), patients requiring cardiac monitoring for medical conditions, and occasional postpartum patients with babies in the NICU. Nursing care involves complex symptom management for patients with multiple comorbidities, patient/family education, extensive wound care, cardiac IV medication drips, and discharge planning with a multidisciplinary team. The RN is accountable for coordinating nursing care, including direct patient care, education, and transitions of care, supporting professional nursing practice across settings and the continuum of care. The RN functions within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, adhering to the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. Leadership activities may include preceptor roles, informal/formal leadership, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care based on skill, experience, acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability. Excellent communication, mentoring, and teaching skills are essential. Participation in committees or projects may be required. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship and welcomes F1 status holders eligible for post-completion OPT. It is NOT eligible for F-1 STEM OPT extension. Successful sponsorship requires state licensure and VisaScreen or equivalent certification.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a nursing program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA).
  • One year of RN experience required.
  • All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date of April 1, 2020, and after must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date.
  • All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date prior to April 1, 2020 must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program as stipulated by the degree requirement program in place at time of hire.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.
  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) must be valid for 90 days post start date; acceptable certifications include: American Heart Association (AHA)/ Heartcode® BLS, Military Training Network, Red Cross (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers).

Responsibilities

  • Coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care.
  • Support professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family.
  • Function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, including accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
  • Provide leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Delegate patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources.
  • Care for patients who have had vascular surgery, patients who are admitted with medical conditions requiring cardiac monitoring, and periodic postpartum patients with babies in the NICU.
  • Manage complex symptom management for patients with multiple comorbidities.
  • Provide patient/family education.
  • Perform extensive wound care.
  • Administer cardiac IV medication drips.
  • Perform discharge planning in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
