About The Position

The Metro Boston Mental Health Unit at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital seeks a compassionate, Registered Nurse V (Nurse Manager) to join a dynamic nursing team. This person will ensure competent, person-centered nursing care for patients on a designated unit. This management and leadership role encompasses patient care, personnel, and unit management within a performance improvement framework. This person directs, guides, and evaluates their unit nursing personnel, maintains effective working relationships with multidisciplinary personnel on the unit, and delegates authority to ensure effective and efficient unit operations. They also coordinate care with the assigned evening and/ or night supervisor, communicating issues involving unit and staff for that shift.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of theories, practices, and trends in nursing.
  • Working knowledge of psychopathology across the life span.
  • Knowledge of current psychopharmacology and other treatment interventions for psychiatric disorders.
  • The ability to effectively utilize the nursing process in problem solving situations.
  • The ability to set a positive working climate and to establish and maintain effective, productive working relationships with others.
  • The ability to organize, manage and supervise other in the provision of quality patient care including management of patient care unit.
  • The ability to direct, teach, supervise, and evaluate nursing staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains a therapeutic unit environment in which effective patient-centered care is assured.
  • Assures that each patient is assigned to an appropriate nurse who is accountable for nursing care decisions and integration of the interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Ensures that a therapeutic unit environment is developed and maintained so that effective patient-centered care is provided as reflected by an active group program.
  • Responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating approved policies and procedures based on standards necessary for the coordination and delivery of patient care.
  • Collaborates with the nurse, physician, primary clinician and other health care professionals in determining and evaluating treatment goals.
  • Evaluates the provision of safe and effective patient care through communication, observation and continuous performance improvement data.
  • Meets with other health care professionals to identify, address and solve individual or unit care issues.
  • Promotes an environment of trauma-informed care, least restrictive interventions and ensures a qualified nurse assumes the “lead” during all incidents of patient escalation, using restraint or seclusion only as a last resort.
  • Encourages nursing staff to use their strengths and work on their weaknesses in order to provide high-quality patient care and ensures that staff receive timely, constructive feedback regarding their performance of patient care.
  • Assures that each patient is assigned to an appropriate MHW Contact Person, and supports the involvement of MHWs in the recovery, treatment planning and debriefing processes on the unit.
