About The Position

This is an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join the Surgical team at Royal Columbian Hospital. The Perioperative Clinical Leader provides leadership in the delivery of patient/client care activities in defined areas of clinical expertise, consistent with clinical best practices and in accordance with established policies, standards and philosophy of the Surgical Services Program. This role provides clinical leadership, guidance and support to team members and acts as a clinical resource for nurses, nursing students, SPD Technicians and other interdisciplinary team members. The position assists staff to provide quality care and related quality assurance requirements to patient/client population by providing information based on specialized theory/practice, assessing clinical/technical skills and participating in direct patient/client care. Royal Columbian Hospital is undergoing a significant redevelopment project to increase capacity, beds, and services.

Requirements

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Three (3) years of recent related clinical experience in the designated clinical area, including one (1) year of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Completion of post-graduate coursework and/or certification applicable to the designated clinical area.
  • Clinical proficiency/expertise in the designated clinical area.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing theory and evidence-based practice within the designated area, including demonstrated skills and techniques to provide nursing care to patients through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic and safety interventions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of health care disciplines and their scope of practice, including a broad knowledge of research processes and methodology.
  • Ability to recognize acuity changes.
  • Ability to supervise and provide leadership and work direction to the integrated team, as required/appropriate.
  • Ability to coordinate patient assignments, in collaboration with staff; monitor staff workload and patient factors and adjust patient assignments accordingly.
  • Ability to establish priorities for patient care, patient flow/discharge planning and overall daily operations of the designated unit(s).
  • Ability to monitor the quality of patient care and ensure maintenance of standards for nursing practice and nursing support staff.
  • Ability to monitor, assess and address performance issues based on professional standards of practice and to provide input to the Manager on formal performance reviews.
  • Ability to role model, coach and mentor best practices in patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates patient/client care and quality assurance activities, providing information and consultation to nurses, SPD Technicians, other health care providers and students.
  • Reviews perioperative slates and determines personnel, equipment and instrumentation needs/requirements.
  • Provides clinical leadership and consultation to clinical staff in insuring compliance with standards of practice to provide quality care based on specialized theory and practice.
  • Supports nursing staff and students by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care, promoting staff collaboration with health care professionals and liaising with OR inventory control, surgeons and anaesthetist's to ensure proper resources are available for perioperative patients.
  • In collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Educator and other multi-disciplinary team members as appropriate, participates in staff development activities such as conducting need assessments of individual nurses and/or unit, coordinating the introduction of new skills/procedures, supporting autonomous nursing practice and arranging nursing in-service sessions/orientations as required.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff by providing support to preceptors and mentors and monitoring/evaluating the progress of new staff.
  • Communicates staff performance information to the Manager.
  • Provides clinical leadership and consultation to clinical staff and students to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care through methods such as insuring compliance with standards of practice, promoting staff collaboration with health care professionals, and liaising with surgeons and anaesthetists to ensure proper resources are available for perioperative patient.
  • Coordinates and participates in quality improvement and risk management activities for assigned areas.
  • Follows up on incident reports and assists to identify and monitor trends and report on findings.
  • Evaluates effect of changes in nursing practice; generates recommendations for alternative approaches to nursing/processing practice recommends changes to selected practices, procedures or protocols.
  • Conducts safety audits and takes corrective action as needed.
  • Consults and collaborates with interdisciplinary team members and other health care professionals/providers in the identification and resolution of a variety of issues.
  • Encourages staff to communicate in a confidential/professional manner; ensures relevant information is documented.
  • Identifies available resources to assist in the management and/or coordination of these issues and makes recommendations for alternative approaches and/or solutions.
  • Sets measurable personal performance goals and objectives within a team or individual environment, incorporating the vision, values, goals and corporate plan.
  • Maintains and updates own knowledge of clinical and professional development within area of practice and develops personal professional development plans.
  • Acts as an expert clinical resource to members of the multi disciplinary team and service providers regarding a range of alternate supplies, equipment and technology.
  • Identifies and develops policies, procedures and standards to support the utilization of resources within the OR.
  • In collaboration with the preference card clerk, reviews and maintains specialty specific physician preference cards.
  • Responsible for identifying efficiency and effectiveness of existing supplies, equipment and technology.
  • Identifies gaps in resources and maintains current knowledge of supplies equipment and technology available both internally and externally to the organization.
  • Accountable for ensuring access to resources is based on client needs and the inclusion/exclusion criteria established by governing bodies such as Health Canada.
  • Responsible for the ongoing monitoring and follow-up of supplies and equipment issues to ensure client needs are met.
  • Evaluates and monitors the effectiveness of resource planning including capital and operating budgets in collaboration with other healthcare disciplines and provides feedback to the manager on areas to review.
  • Designs and recommends service delivery models for specific resource issues where complex requirements such as safety guidelines do not fit established program/service criteria.
  • Coordinates resources and equipment; identifies additional resource needs.
  • Reviews utilization of specialty equipment not owned by the site and coordinates loans with other Health Care Facilities/Authorities.
  • Identifies the cost/benefits of borrowing versus purchasing sets and assesses equipment requiring frequent processing.
  • Acquires and maintains in-depth knowledge of perioperative services and processes within Fraser Health and maintains contacts outside of the referral area.
  • Participates in local regional meetings as required.
  • In collaboration with the manager, participates in the preparation of business case analysis of product budget and opportunities to standardize the utilization of equipment and supplies.
  • Communicates recommendations to appropriate stakeholders through the use of spreadsheets, charts, and descriptive summaries.
  • Gathers and incorporates feedback to all stakeholders.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
