The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a key part of Denver Health's Level I Trauma Center, safety net, and tertiary care center. Our 23-bed unit is equipped with the latest technology and emergency equipment to provide comprehensive care to critically ill and injured patients, aged 15 and older. The patient population primarily consists of critically ill or complex general surgery patients, with 70-80% being trauma patients suffering from injuries due to motor vehicle accidents, bicycle injuries, ski accidents, pedestrian versus auto encounters, traumatic brain injuries, falls, injuries from violent crimes, and other serious traumatic events. The SICU maintains a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2, with the most critical patients receiving 1:1 care.
