About The Position

Nurses working on the Surgical Acute Care unit pride themselves on providing outstanding care. We coordinate independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective participative member of multidisciplinary patient care service team. The Surgical Acute Care unit is a 24 bed post-surgical unit designated for the care and management of patients from various surgical services. Scope of service includes but is not limited to: continuous cardiac monitoring, continuous oxygen saturations, drain management, and wound management. Patients are admitted following surgical procedures via intra-hospital transfer from IMC, ICU, PACU, or direct admissions through Express Care/Critical Care Resuscitation Unit (CCRU). The Surgical Acute Care unit serves as the primary postoperative designation for various specialty surgical services, including Surgical Oncology, Gynecology Neoplasia, Gynecology, Urology, Acute Care Emergency Surgery, General Surgery, Otolaryngology, Oral Maxillary Facial, and Plastic Surgery. Requirements

Competent evaluation with successful passing of probation; current on all mandatory classes/training.
Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required.
Maintenance of 10 contact hours of education/year.
Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting.
Demonstrated ability to lead others, such as effectiveness as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource.
Demonstrated effectiveness as a multidisciplinary team member.
Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information.
Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served.
Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
Demonstrated/documented highly effective interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

Coordinate independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective participative member of multidisciplinary patient care service team.
Provide care and management of patients on a 24-bed post-surgical unit.
Perform continuous cardiac monitoring.
Perform continuous oxygen saturations monitoring.
Manage patient drains.
Manage patient wounds.
Ensure patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
Take action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
Report adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
Identify possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicate the same to those in charge.
