About The Position

The Temple University’s Health and Well-being Department is searching for a Registered Nurse-Student Health Services to join our team! This is an onsite, 10-month position with 2 months off in the summer. The role requires background checks including Child Abuse Clearance and Criminal Background Check. The position may require working Saturdays and/or overtime if needed. Staff RN provides outpatient nursing care to students, triages patients to determine medical condition, and assists physicians or CRNPs with patient examinations. The RN reviews physician or CRNP orders, lab requests, or follow-up needs with patients, performs CLIA waived laboratory tests, and administers specified medications. Care is primarily rendered at Main Campus Student Health Services, with potential rotation to Health Science Campus and Employee Health Services.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school RN program.
  • Registered nurse with current Pennsylvania license required.
  • Minimum 3 or more years clinical experience required.
  • Must have knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with systems for maintaining health records.
  • Ability to organize and manage the delivery of health care services.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to health care practice.

Responsibilities

  • Provides outpatient-nursing care primarily to Temple University students, including first aid and nursing assessment of acute and chronic illnesses on an appointment and walk-in basis.
  • Triage patients for emergency, immediate, and follow-up medical care.
  • Escorts patients to exam rooms, obtains and records vital signs, height, weight, temperature, and chief complaint.
  • Prepares patients for examination in conformance with provider’s needs, which may require minimal lifting of patients.
  • Documents patient’s care given in electronic medical record.
  • Utilizes a computerized medical information system to schedule appointments and enter data for patient demographics, visit, diagnosis, procedures, immunizations, and charges.
  • Provides health education to student patients.
  • Controls flow of patients in and out of exam rooms.
  • Assists with exams when requested by a provider or patient.
  • Draws blood and prepares lab specimens and lab slips.
  • Performs CLIA waived laboratory tests such as urine pregnancy and dipstick analysis as requested by physician or nurse practitioner.
  • Provides routine and allergy injections as ordered by physician.
  • Assists in the development of nursing protocols.
  • Dispenses prescription and over-the-counter medications as ordered by physician.
  • Participates in staff meetings, quality improvement projects, and committees as appropriate.
  • Assists in the coordination of outreach in cooperation with other departments for specific medical issues, e.g., immunization programs.
  • Promotes health education and illness prevention initiatives throughout the University.
  • Participates in the maintenance of an appropriate formulary by making recommendations for medical and surgical supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
