About The Position

Responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Maintains accountability for his/her own practice; provides nursing care for patients; participates in patient and family teaching; and provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary, nursing, and other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the acute oncology care setting. The Registered Nurse also delegates/provides direction to other nursing personnel in the unit in accordance with their level of experience and expertise.

Requirements

  • Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse license
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • ONS Biotherapy administration certification
  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing
  • Proficient keyboarding and computer skills
  • Ability to learn OMC computer applications
  • Currently licensed in the state of Wisconsin as a Registered Nurse in good standing
  • ONS Biotherapy & Chemotherapy Administration Certification
  • Current BLS, certification or willing to obtain
  • Meets OMC health requirements
  • Ability to perform essential functions of a Registered Nurse
  • Knowledge of current nursing practices and technical skills
  • Maintains expertise in oncology nursing
  • Skilled in use of basic patient care equipment and supplies
  • Ability to demonstrate and maintain required competencies
  • Ability to recognize change in patient condition/body systems
  • Knowledge of infection control practices and their relation to patient care outcomes
  • Accuracy and attention to detail in performing all job duties
  • Ability to assess multiple systems, develop plan of care, provide intervention and education, and assess outcomes of patient care
  • Ensure that all physician orders are transcribed accurately and carried out as soon as possible

  • Ability to assist patients with mobility, positioning, and activities of daily living.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform clinical procedures including venipuncture, IV insertion, medication administration, and operation of medical equipment.
  • Visual acuity adequate to assess patient conditions, read medical records, medication labels, and computer screens.
  • Auditory ability sufficient to communicate with patients, families, providers, and staff, including ability to hear alarms, monitors, and telephone communications.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency or high-stress situations.
  • Frequent use of computers and electronic medical record systems requiring repetitive hand and wrist movements.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, masks, gowns, and eye protection.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous medications, chemotherapy agents, bodily fluids, and other potentially hazardous materials consistent with oncology care settings.
  • Ability to maintain emotional resilience and concentration in a fast-paced, emotionally demanding environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides skilled nursing care in accordance with nurse practice acts
  • Delegates patient care appropriately to other team members.
  • Follows the Standards of Nursing Care as well as the Nursing Process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation while delivering high quality patient care.
  • Follows Oncology Nursing Society standards and maintains documentation accordingly
  • Administers chemotherapy/biotherapy and other infusions in the outpatient setting
  • Participates in the interdisciplinary plan of care to ensure that quality nursing care is provided
  • Utilizes community resources to enhance the care of oncology patients
  • Serves in the patient case manager role as needed
  • Reviews charts prior to the oncology clinic day to ensure that all necessary documentation is organized and easily accessible for the Oncologist
  • Pushes images to HP and faxes request for images to be uploaded.
  • Facilitates scheduling of follow-up appointments, chemotherapy appointments, and any tests ordered by the Oncologist
  • Ensures that orders are addressed accurately and timely.
  • Summarizes clinic updates and shares with team via email.
  • Demonstrates a team/collaborative approach with colleagues
  • Helps and supports co-workers and physicians
  • Helps and supports patients and their families
  • Serves as the oncology expert in the clinic/hospital/community
  • Applies knowledge base to clinical situation

  • Interacts with physicians regarding patient status on an on-going basis

  • Takes initiative to complete all mandatory education requirements including HealthStream without being reminded
  • Attends 80% of department meetings annually.
  • Maintains appropriate licenses and certifications independently
