About The Position

SuiteMate Healthcare Staffing is seeking experienced and mission-driven Registered Nurses (RNs) to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a clinical setting. The role involves performing moderate to complex patient service work, including routine and emergency care, treatment, and training. RNs will work under moderate supervision, conduct comprehensive assessments, identify nursing diagnoses, and formulate care plans. They will also serve as team leaders, provide clinical supervision, establish unit routines, and maintain a therapeutic milieu. Responsibilities include observing patient behavior, administering medications, maintaining records, and potentially leading therapeutic groups or training other staff. The position requires flexibility with shifts, including up to 16-hour shifts and overtime, and may involve exposure to infectious materials. Compliance with facility Standard Operating Procedures and Joint Commission guidelines is essential.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas (or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact)
  • Current CPR certification
  • Valid Photo ID
  • Prior experience performing psychiatric nursing duties
  • Considerable knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures; of health care laws and regulations; of medical diagnoses and procedures; of accepted medical treatment patterns; of community health and nursing care principles, practices, and procedures; of program regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to appropriately interact with individuals with developmental or psychiatric disabilities and staff members.
  • Knowledge of nursing care standards, nursing procedures, techniques, and the principles and processes used in providing appropriate patient care.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and emergency equipment, i.e., CPR, and ability to assess and care for residents and/or staff members in emergencies.
  • Skills in using reasoning to identify problems and in considering an appropriate resolution of situations.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and applicable computer software.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and to use an electronic health record system once trained.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to instruct others.
  • Must have strength and flexibility to safely perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Responsibilities

  • Performs moderate to complex patient service work, including routine and emergency care, treatment, and training for people with intellectual disabilities in a residential setting.
  • Performs routine nursing work at the competent level.
  • Works under moderate supervision from Charge Nurses or Nurse Managers (Nurses II/III) with limited use of initiative and independent judgment.
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments of patients' nursing care needs using specialized skills in psychiatric or medical-surgical nursing.
  • Identifies nursing diagnoses or problem lists and formulates an initial plan of care based on assessment data.
  • Serves as a team leader and provides clinical supervision to other nursing staff members including Licensed Vocational Nurses, and Mental Health Workers as necessary.
  • Establishes unit routines and develops and maintains the therapeutic milieu.
  • Makes observations of patient behavior and status and reports to the physician, other team members and supervisor as appropriate.
  • Carries out nursing interventions as identified in the multidisciplinary treatment plan.
  • Administers medications as ordered and maintains medication administration and controlled drug records according to facility policy.
  • Serves as group leader for therapeutic patient groups or patient teaching activities as necessary or as requested.
  • Trains other staff members as necessary or as requested.
  • Understands that duties, location of work, and shift/pattern are subject to change as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital.
  • Understands that duties may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material.
  • Complies with facility Standard Operating Procedures to meet standards for accrediting agencies; specifically, Joint Commission guidelines.
