About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) in PACU provides direct, age-specific patient care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. The role supports illness and injury prevention, wellness maintenance, and patient comfort; recognizes or anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately; mobilizes resources to meet individual patient and family needs; and safely administers prescribed medications while identifying incompatibilities or interactions. The nurse accurately documents care and provides direction and education, with leadership responsibilities and role-modeling expectations varying by clinical level. Practice follows physician or licensed independent provider orders, Virginia nursing regulations, the ANA Code of Ethics, national nursing practice standards, and VCUHS policies and procedures. Clinicians organize work and may delegate and supervise other RNs, LPNs, care partners, and unit secretaries. The role serves age groups appropriate to the unit assignment. Clinicians work across shifts, including weekends and holidays; rotations and schedules are set with the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager and may be adjusted to meet unit needs.
