About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department provides nursing care to medically ill and traumatized patients of various criticalities. Will perform triage to determine the patient’s level of severity/priority. The ED RN must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the ED. Individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Will possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed identifying each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs. Able to provide care needed as described in all policies and procedures. This role involves direct patient care, assessment, monitoring, assisting physicians, maintaining documentation, patient and family education, medication administration, and participation in departmental activities.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) who has successfully graduated from an accredited School of Nursing
  • Current license to practice in the state of Kansas
  • At least 1 year of Acute Med-Surg Nursing experience or emergency nursing experience
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to adapt to change
  • Good organizational and computer skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
  • Ability to write simple correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information and address questions from residents, family members, medical staff, other employees, and the general public
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Current Kansas Nurse certification
  • Current BLS certification
  • Current ACLS Certification

Nice To Haves

  • Two to three yrs. emergency nursing experience or three to four yrs. of clinical nursing in a medical or surgical unit
  • Experience in pediatrics, obstetrics, care of burn patients and surgery desirable
  • ABLS, ENPC, CEN preferred; not required
  • TNCC, STABLE and PALS or PEARS certifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care, evaluate outcomes and adjust the nursing care process as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Able to perform a focused assessment and head-to-toe assessment and reassessment. This includes pediatric, adolescent, geriatric and the general patient population.
  • Able to monitor the hemodynamic status of the patient and correctly interpret results.
  • Knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies arrhythmia, and intervenes using ACLS algorithm and physician order.
  • Prepare patient for examination or procedure and assist the physician or mid-level provider.
  • Maintain accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient history, condition, vital signs, treatment, response to intervention and change of status.
  • Treat patient and their family with respect and dignity.
  • Function as a liaison for the patient between the physician and other health care providers.
  • Teach the patient based on identified learning needs; evaluate the effectiveness of the patients learning.
  • Include the family in the teaching as appropriate.
  • Review written discharge instructions with the patient or responsible party.
  • Accurately triage patients.
  • Explain delays and waiting time.
  • Maintain current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age and patient clinical condition.
  • Calculate, prepare, hang, monitor and discontinue IV fluids and medication drips.
  • Complete nursing and pharmacy charge.
  • Arrange for patient transfer to other departments and facilities, complete required documentation.
  • Respond to Code Blue in another area depending upon situation in the department.
  • Behave in a professional manner and maintain good interpersonal relationships with other staff, departments, supervisors, and physicians.
  • Assist with the orientation of new employees to the department.
  • Supervise and provide nursing and EMT students opportunities to observe and learn.
  • Prepares and processes requisitions for housekeeping, maintenance and general supply needs and ensures adequate par levels are maintained.
  • Notifies appropriate department(s) for repairs.
  • Participates in intra- and interdepartmental committee activities.
  • Completes mandatory in-services/competencies during specified times.
  • Demonstrates positive working relationships with all health care customers.
  • Adheres to Coffey Health System staffing and scheduling practices per personnel and nursing policy.
  • Functions with an awareness and application of safety issues as identified within the institution.
  • Participates actively in educational activities for department.
  • Comply with the personnel policies, department policies and CHS Code of Conduct.
  • Act as a preceptor, guiding and supervising nursing students in the clinical settings, providing feedback on their performance.
  • Serve as a role model, educator, and clinical expert, helping students develop competence and confidence while prioritizing patient safety.
